been learning this very thing at tafe and what we have been taught is when u join a group never consider your self lower than the others just because you are new you have just as may rights as everyone else.
killerasp confront the person and say what ever is on your mind give facts but dont put him down if he still trys to try and make you feel smaller then him. You be the leader even though your not, your experence should be enough to give some really good ideas to the group. the group will start to see your are more suited for the job. the main thing is dont give up because then he will win. just my 2 cents gl |

Thanks for words of wisdom yall. Btw, i am in college.
I will talk the head guy and ask him about his position and what he is planning to do about it. But it will be another thing if turns out that his other person will get the position and not me. Then, some adjustment will have to be made. |

IMNSHO,
You come off like a total jerk in your post. How many times do you refer to the people you work with as idiots? Do you make them feel like idiots when you are working with them? Maybe the other person isn't so technically proficient, but maybe they are a better leader overall. There is a lot more to leading than just the technical knowledge of the job. Just sit down with the person in charge and explain to them why you are the one that should be in charge. You have to sell yourself to them. Don't mention the other people, don't mention how much better you are over them, just tell and show him how good you (alone) are and how you can be a leader for the group. Bring some ideas and goals that you want to see accomplished. If you want to be a leader, then it's the duty of a leader to set up the people under him for success. From the tone of your post, you just want to set up the "idiots" for failure, and that is poor leadership. Take this all with a grain of salt and understand that I'm in the military, so I see things from a different perspective... ---John Holmes... |

Re:
Ok, I, too, am a college student. I have been a project leader for over a dozen IT-related projects (database, web, software, etc).
Here is what I would do in your situation: Use your skills to do your job the best that you can. If one of these other people gets put in charge, then offer your experience and knowledge to help them grow. That's why they are in college in the first place. If they knew everything, they wouldn't have to go. Just like there are things that people know that you probably don't. This isn't a bad thing, it just shows that you have some room to learn. And in your case, you have things to learn while you are there in college, AND you have the knowledge to help others understand. Just sit down with the group, not one or two of them, but all of them (communication is the key to a successful group) and be like, "Hey, I understand we may be getting a new project leader, and I feel that I have the most experience, however, if I am not chosen, that is fine, but whoever is chosen can come to me for assistance." |
