Website Category Layout?
Whenever I'm working on a website project, it's always the little things that I have the hardest time thinking through...
so I need some advice. ![]() I'm working on an online store for a company which sells different types of jewelry: pendants, rings, bracelets, key chains, etc. Some of these items are made of precious metals like platinum, gold, silver, etc... while some are made from lower-end materials such as pewter, leather, etc... The company doesn't know the best way to categorize it, and neither do I... ![]() I just want browsing to be as easy as possible for any customers... Should I do the metal / material as main category, and type of jewelry as subcats? Code:
Gold -- rings -- pendants Pewter -- rings -- bracelets or type as category and material as subcats? Code:
Rings -- gold -- pewter Bracelets -- pewter Pendants -- gold or maybe something similar to zales.com?... I know this might be considered a "dumb question", but I'm not sure which would be best. Any comments / suggestions??? |

Perhaps you could allow the user to choose which categorisation they would like - by item type or material. You could chose which was the default and the user could rearrange it if the alternative makes more sense to them.
Whether or not this solution is easy (or possible) will depend on how you are storing the information on each product. Mac

Do you come to a jewelry website looking for "gold or silver" or "rings or bracelets"? I'd guess the second is more common. The typical user is going to know he/she's looking for a ring, and would want that category first. They could then decide upon gold or silver. So, I'll put my vote in for the second method.
![]() Also, I think you'd want the category with the largest number as the "main". I'm sure there are more types of jewelry than there are types of metals. So again, I'm in support of method 2. ![]() ---John Holmes... |

I worked on a jewlery website a while ago and we did it via type, logical way to go really.
