Who here codes while standing up?
I'm thinking about progressing from over-rated desk chairs and set up my workstation at a bar-like structure so I can work while standing up.
I want to be able to lean on the bar and point/wink at the screen when funny stuff happens. I did it from a couch for three months once and it was great. So enough of me. Who here codes from strange places? Positions? Annoying rooms? Exotic locations? |

When i was younger, I had a chair like this, you might know it:
It is formed like a "Z". You rest your knees on a coushin and it has no backrest. You sit very straight, this is supposed to be good for your back. Also, i tried sitting on an air filled plastic ball, also because it is supposed to be good for the back too. Nothing really "exotic", and today i prefer a normal, comfortable chair. Standing is IMHO bad. You will have to lean down to reach the keyboard and have your head point a little to the front. This is unnatural.

I am in a rather cramped space in a corner of my bedroom most of the time. I have a big leather executive chair and a little computer desk. I slump into the seat, prop my feet up on the desk, then loop my left arm under my left knee and prop my right arm on my right knee.
It's quite a sight to behold, I'm sure... $7000 for that chair... ouch! ![]() |

When I first started with HTML and JavaScript, I used to use my WebTV, so I coded while lying on my bed for a while.
Then when I got to college, I coded from a recliner for a year, then in my new apartment (and at home) I just code from a normal desk chair. The best I've ever used, and was only for a few weeks, was a Coleman fold-up camping chair. It was really comfy... |

You can edit text on a webtv? Hmm.
BTW, MicroSoft has a webtv "viewer" you can d/l from thier site. My sites worked suprisingly well, and it was interesting to someone else's idea of how a browser could work. Unfortunately, the view only runs on win32, so I had to have a coworker install it. The thing I discovered- NO ARM RESTS. I thought I was getting RSI until I got rid of my armrests. Overnight, my RSI symptoms disappeared. |

Armrests? Really? I always thought it was odd that my wrists started to hurt when I propped my arms like that, so I'll have to try just holding my arms up instead of resting them on something.
Another thing: get something to wrest your palms on. I found that I was resting my palms / wrists to close to the edge of teh table, and the sharp edge was cutting into my wrists and cutting off circulation. Boy did that start to hurt after awhile! |

hey, i have no armrests too! works better for me since i tend to squirm around my chair a lot when working.
i also push my monitor, mouse and keyboard near the back of the table (close to falling off). that way my arms are resting on the table and my wrist has some sort of support. haven't coded standing up, though. |

I have a normal comfy chair with arm rests at work and without at home. The one at work is really nice but the arm rests get annoying since they bang into the desk if the chair is set too high.
I have never had any problems with RSI |
