WiFi help!!
Hey guyz just have a question about WiFi. Sorry if this is in the wrong place..! I had NO idea of where to put it
I'm setting up a 801.11b wireless network for my friend at her place but she doesnt have a huge amount of money to spend on it, so i was wondering if i could just use a client card in her desktop as well as her laptop instead of having to buy an AP for the desktop..? Also, if that IS possible, can more that 1 wireless client connect to the card in the desktop, or would i need an AP there if i wanted more that 1 client to be able to connect..? I drew a diagram thing, cause i cant explain stuff for crap!!! (good old paint! ) http://rob.ice-attack.net/wifi.JPG Anyway's thanks for ya help, Rob. |

I would suggest an AP for better signal. You would only need
one AP and connect that to a router and use local IPs. Depending on what company you are getting your wireless from you may be able to use the D-Link. I say it depends on what your WSP is using because sometimes they don't talk to each other. I've had wireless internet, I've worked for a WSP. and i still went cable...what does that tell you? |

I have only worked with point-to-point wireless networks (.11b). You can connect one wireless lan card to another one without an access point. But I have only done this with single machines.
iirc, I read something some weeks ago about a linux project for building an AP. So it has to be possible somehow (I doubt they put several wlan cards into a linux box, APs are not that expensive...) If you didnīt find out yet and are still interested, I can look it up. M.
