Wireless Network

I have just bought:

Belkin 54g Desktop Pci Interface Card
Belkin 54g Desktop CardBus Interface Card

I have the PCI one in my server, my server is contected to my main network. I am having trouble understanding what i am suppose to do. I thought the wireless PCI one would act as a bridge between my physical network and open up a wirelless one.

The software provided, can only look for available wireless networks, not create a new one. What i want to do is have my laptop access my physical network.

Do i have to buy the access point, or can i get them going ad hoc. There is an optino for ad hoc, but it is still look for available ones, it doesn#'t let you create em, and if you set em both off searching at the same time they find nothing.

any ideas ?

Thanks

You have to get an access point.

You can either buy one, or use an old computer as one. There are programs out there on a bootable CD that'll take an old computer and make it into an access point. You'll need a wireless card to act as the receiver, though.

TechTV had a review on some of these a week or so ago. I think www.locustworld.com was one of them. There are others.

Or just buy a ready-made one.

All of my wireless networking has been through Apple's Airport, but:

If you are connecting between only two machines, you should be able to set up a peer -to - peer connection between the two computers so long as their not more than about 100 feet from each other.

Anymore than that you need to buy a base station or "access points".
