Here I am at work on a Saturday morning waiting for the IIS server to fix the broken FrontPage extensions... we should have been done moving this website to a new server half an hour ago.. but IIS ****ed everything up, of course.
Had we been using Apache and Dreamweaver, of course, instead of following this stupid 'Microsoft-only' policy, all we would have had to do was make a quick change to a DNS entry and restart the Apache service.. but no... the IIS service lost state and hung up, so the box had to come down and be brought back up. That, of course, fragged everything in the web... what fun... what should've taken a half hour of my Saturday will now take half the day or more. If anyone from Microsoft is reading this... I soooooo dare you to come within five feet of me..... |

My ***.....
The stupid IIS server keeps munting up. We have to bring the box down and up AGAIN because the FrontPage Server Extensions locked everything up.... I have to wonder, if it would take a thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters a thousand years for Shakespear... how many minutes would it take them to spit out the IIS and FrontPage codebases? |

You know why I'm a four-eyed clown? Because Bill Gates drove me out of my damn mind.
We worked on it from 9-12. I'm going back at 2 after the extensions are theoretically "repaired" on the server... cripes... it's me and my girl's anniversary weekend on top of all that.... On the plus side, I learned Java yesterday. Now I can start answering questions there too shortly (but I"m still scared of the PHP forum...) |

No arguments here on IIS and Winblows server. I can't stand Server and IIS.
Frontpage ext's are a menace. It still amazes me that people use Frontpage and anything connected to it. |

I hear that... I've been attempting to push Apache, but, amazingly, they still won't listen |

You know how people always worry about postal employees with guns? I think they need to start worrying about IT/IS people.. LOL
![]() We got it mostly unbungled - turns out the service.lck file gets farked now and then (yes.. that's right... a 0 byte file got corrupted - only Microsoft...) and needs to be deleted. After fiddling with some permissions issues we finally got everything sorted out... what a nightmare. |

My god, IIS + FrontPage are just sh*t. But they're not bad for beginners.

1. They're bad for EVERYBODY (even the hamsters) 2. I'd like to see a beginner work IIS.. psheesh... I run Apache all the time for dev on Windows and Linux in several different environments and I can't for the life of me figure out how to effectively implement IIS. It's one of the biggest peices of junk M$ ever put out. |

I actually run IIS on XP. I'm probably an advanced beginner, as I know a thing or two. IIS is too convenient for Windows users: it comes with the OS, and you don't have to install anything to use ASP. Want to run Apache or PHP for Windows? Could take a while to get setup. Last I checked, Apache's website was a mess. It was hard to find what you're looking for. That's how Microsoft sells their products (in a marketing sense).

I don't get how this is page makes it hard to find what you're looking for... http://httpd.apache.org/ You can get to the page by clicking the HTTPD Server link, which is the first one available on their homepage. There are plenty of installers out there that setup Apache & PHP for you in (basically) one click... or, you can RTM and figure out how to do it yourself. You're absolutely right, though... making technology brain-dead simple is how MS and Apple sell their products to the masses. FWIW, though, having an 'admission price' on tech can weed out the dummies, so keeping an Apache/PHP install slightly non-trivial isn't necessarily a bad thing. |
