Working with unresponsive computers at work
i am actually getting quite frustrated with my work. 1st theres bad code, 2nd theres very unresponsive computers... what will u do if when u type something and it takes 5sec or more to appear on screen? then when u click close on the browser it can hang for >1min to close or minimize? since simple interactions like typing and clicking cannot be handled, u can imagine how irritating it can be to do real work? like exporting/importing a db, executing sql statements etc?

Speak to the support guys in your office. Sounds like a process is hogging the CPU or the machine isn't powerful enough to run the software you are using

If they keep blagging you about how they can't afford a new machine for you or that it's not very important then try and stress to them how it actually hinders your work due to the machine itself being so slow as well as affecting your mental health due to the frustration you are suffering.
I've been in a similar boat a few years ago and in the end it came down to them constantly trying to rush me. At some point I just had enough and stopped trying to rush on such a relic of a system. I took in some books and a digital chess game and just read/played whilst waiting for things to open/save/close etc.
They got progressively peeved at my seemingly slow work and apparent slacking off until I told one of them to stand next to me and watch the magic in progress. After about 5 minutes of waiting for MS SQL administrator to load and then another few minutes for it to connect they stormed off stating they didn't have time to waste standing around. A week later I had a new machine.
The one thing to be wary about is that once you do get a new machine their expectations of you will increase so you better be ready.

i'd say it's important to figure out whether this is a network issue (have users or bandwidth-hungry jobs been added to an existing network without upgrading the latter ?) or a PC issue (have you had any recent upgrade to newer versions of software ? as a rule newer software tends to be more memory-hungry and after some time you may find that what was adequate hardware no longer can keep up)
who decides what PC you're allowed to have + are they aware of the real job requirements ? the worst you can have is an admin who makes decisions for other users whilst only using e-mail and office software themselves

That the PC take seconds to have whatever you typed apear on the screen; that sounds like a memory (or lack of it) problem.
Even a good ole 286 machine is able to handle quick typing as long as they aren't loaded down with crap.

I have seen a good ol' PC XT (that's a 4.77MHz 8086) cope with a trained PS typing full-tilt into MultiMate.. No idea what kps she was doing but it managed to keep up.

Once we had an AntiVirus program which used to hog our machines when ever it started to scan the hard disk for any potential threats. Worse then they was that the fact that for some reason or another the AntiVirus started a full hard disk scan whenever we pressed the compile button... for that reason the process of compiling could take up minutes rather then seconds.
Maybe you have a similar problem... or some other underlying process which is taking all the resources ... a virus could also be the culprit.

yeah, ANY machine, no matter how old, should be able to keep up with the fastest typers.

At my last company we were told that slow PCs were "not management's problem." We tried to make them see that forcing the devs to spend 1-2 hours a day waiting on the machine was wasting money for them, but it fell on deaf ears. We started inviting our bosses in to do code reviews and make them wait for us to open up a browser. Once you waste an hour of their time in a week staring at your computer screen, they get an idea of how much money they're wasting, they'll figure $300 for a new Dell isn't that big of a deal.

Yikes, this just screams communications problem.
Anyway, I was getting ready to post a "well my pc is super quick I feel so lucky blah blah", when for the first time in ages my work PC ground to a halt and I had to reboot. Visual Studio was quite non-visual and TOAD had most definitely croaked.

At the current company we made a deal with management: Dev meets a relatively stringent deadline, we each get 4GB RAM and 2x22" monitors. We met the deadline, and the computers were pretty quick again.
(Then I switched to Ubuntu and they were REALLY quick)
