I applied and got a response, but the $ they were willing to pay was /way/ lower than what I was making writing for other magazines at the time (at least a tenth less), for the same number of words per article. Just didn't make sense. I haven't checked in with them in awhile though, maybe they've adjusted their rates (hopefully up).

It was $60 last time I checked. I never actually got paid for any of mine so in reality it was more like $0. I didn't like the layout format anyhow and the fact you couldn't use PNG images was annoying. I think I still have a writing slot if I ever get time, it's fun to do for the sake of it but I wouldn't think about making a living here.

Right on- it was a few years ago when I inquired, and the rate was at about $45 or $50 back then. At the time I was pulling $500+ writing for other publications, so it was tough to justify putting in the same amount of time for that much less. However, I will say that if you don't have any previous experience writing technical articles, and don't have a publication track record, writing for Devshed is a kick butt way to get your foot in the door. |

Wow $500 per article? That's well cool. Are they alot longer than the ones DS uses though? DS has a maximum word count which I found a tad restrictive. It was like university assignments in reverse. You know where you try to expand your meager writing by changing all "it's" into "it is" etc. At DS it was the other way around, felt a bit like dumbing it down.

Yea, it was a bit odd how I fell bass-akwards into the whole thing. I was beta-testing Zend Studio back in '02 or '03, when it first came out. One of the Zend managers called me to ask what I thought about the product (this was way back before it was Eclipse based, mind you). The manager at Zend liked what I said on the phone, and asked if I'd be interested in writing a product review for it. She hooked me up w/ a magazine. I was just excited to get writing experience; then the publication offered me $500 for the article, and Zend gave me a 3 year free license for Studio. Of course, I said 'yes'. After I wrote that article, the publication - which liked my work, even though it was my first industry publication - asked if I would be interested in continuing to contribute to their magazine, again at $500 per article. I wrote for them for about 2 years. At the time, my son had just been diagnosed w/ autism, so the extra income was a godsend for paying off medical bills. Having articles published is one of the best ways to boost your career, btw; I've had recruiters find me out of the blue based on my publications, w/ great job offers as a result (you would not believe who has offered me a job if I told you... it actually still sounds unbelievable to me sometimes). The writing also led to paid engagements speaking at conferences, and a book offer (which I sadly declined due to time constraints; at the time I had just started my first company, and was going through the patent application and grant process, which was very time consuming). Anyhow... yeah, though 'shed pays for s*** for writing, it's a way to move 1 rung up the ladder and work your way into writing for other rags, which is awesome. And definitely worth it. |
