Do I have ANY chance at getting into the Microsoft Redmond campus as H1B?

    Hey all,

I'm graduating soon with a master of science degree in electrical and computer engineering from Georgia Tech. I did grad at Georgia Tech, my undergrad was in France. I can't work in the US, i will need sponsorship. I just sent my resume to Microsoft... Does anyone know the chances I have in getting at least an interview? I have 10 months experience and hold 2 professional certifications (one of them is Cisco) and finished my master with 4.0 GPA... Anyone got there through an H1B or know people who have done that? Thanks all.

    Cheers,

I'd say pretty good, I interviewed with microsoft as an undergrad and they took a lot of people to onsite interviews.

And its one of those thigns where the further you make it in the day the better chance you have. Each interview is an hour and if they dont' like you they cut you off after 4 then each interview after that is pretty much a do or die. Well I had made it to the 8th (and final) interview.

The first question out of the guys mouth was what's one feature of software you don't like and how would you improve it. Well I picked a feature that that guy had designed (he got all defensive and flustered about it) the rest of the hour went downhill very quickly.

So my advice with MS is if you pick something to complain about, pick something that's not a microsoft product you never know just who you might be talking to.

I would say "Windows reliability is...lacking." Dress up your words - they want to know you're not afraid to give an honest opinion. My teacher has always said that most jobs want honest opinions, rather than sucking up. The sucking up part comes later, at the interview be honest. But with dealing with stuff like this, you have to dress up the words - make it feel like Windows is not entirely unreliable, but is unreliable enough to need improvement. That's what they want to hear.

Interview probably yes... bur... you shouldn't tell them about H1B if they don't ask before the interview...
At least having the interview would be good experience.

Getting the job? That's a whole another story. You'd have to tell them you need a sponsorship from Microsoft at least at the interview. That might put a cringe on their face unless you really showed off in the interview. The company has to go throught a lot of legal issue and cost to sponsor you... they probably have all the procedure in place... but they'd rather not go throught with it. It's better if you already have H1B and all they need to do is transfer it but it still may put a cramp in your style... if you know what I mean.

I'm assuming that if I get the interview, they would be prepared to sponsor me because otherwise they wouldn't bother interviewing me. It shows on my resume that I am not allowed to work in the USA.

Can i get an H1B visa without already having a job???

Uh... no... that would be illegal. There are many cases people "have job" on paper but they don't actually work... of course... I don't recommend you going this route... due to illegality and cost...

if you are F-1, you are legally allowed to have OPT for a year after school, which gives you opportunity to work before you get on H1B. But i am not sure if you necessarily have to have a job lined up or not before applying for OPT.

There are just waaaayyyy too many people that just want in. Half the time for no other reason than they just want to move. They have to weed out the lazy losers that will eventually live off the system at the cost of the citizens, and the ones that actually want to contribute.

It has gotten somewhat rediculous, but at least they know that if you made it through the whole bloody process you are probably a hard worker.

Considering Microsoft is one of the few of the hundreds of companies that come to our campus to recruit AND actually actively targets international students, I'd say you have a chance.
