    Why not use Thunderbird? Is there a specific reason you want Outlook, like the calendar functions? Do you need to talk to Exchange? Otherwise, Thunderbird is a better option, and its spam filtering function is much, much better.

    think he means which type of protocol to use: think he's confused betwixt POP3 and IMAP.
    while ((code="javascript").substring(0,4)=="java") code!="java"

    while ((gratitude="thanks in advance").substring(0,6)=="thanks") gratitude!="thanks"

    I'm surprised there isn't anything that addresses this.

    That's what I was thinking - either that or the POP and SMTP settings for hotmail and yahoo.

    Trying not to assume things these days - been assuming things wrongly lately.

    Thunderbird is waaaay over-rated *. Sure its spam filtering is good.
    But integration with other software currently sucks. MS Outlook is better in that respect at least. (not to mention calendar and tasks).

    With regards to the OP's question. I don't think Outlook can use hotmail and yahoo accounts as main "POP" accounts. Outlook Express allows interaction with Hotmail, but Yahoo is a different story all together. yahoo mail @ co.uk has some smtp features, but I have never managed(nor want to really) integrate it into my main e-mail client.

    And related to sync between palm and the afore mentioned e-mail accounts, outlook is the best client for syncing between PC and device - though as previously stated, I don't really think too much s possible with hotmail and yahoo (.com at least).

    * I currently us TB as my main e-mail cleint.

    • Arty Ziff agrees : I use it mainly because of the spam filtering. But other than that, I agree, integration needs work.

    Cheers,
    Jamie

    In my experience, Thunderbird's integration with other software is far superior to Outlook's. For a start, Outlook doesn't integrate very well with my operating system

    • Arty Ziff disagrees : Does it sync up with your hand-held? Does it integrate with your calendar software? These are things many people need.

    IIRC new (as in more recent than a few months) hotmail accounts will not be permited to be accessed by Outlook. Only older accounts will be allowed to continue to use this method.
    My hotmail account is setup by merely selecting http was the type of account and then 'Hotmail' as the http mail service provider - Outlook 2003 does all the 'nasty' config stuff for you.
    I did have my account setup on an older system (Outlook 95?) and that required more configuration but I cannot recall what.

    Hence the "in my experience" and the winking smiley. It doesn't do either of those things. On the other hand, Outlook doesn't either, nor does it handle email.

    Apparently there is a plugin to sync Thunderbird and the Palm along with some other info here.

    Wonder why. I would think that Microsoft would go out of their way to allow tight Hotmail / Outlook integration, maybe even make Outlook the only non-Web mail client that could talk to Hotmail... I would think...

    For a start it may not be on your computer as MS sell things separately. However you may have outlook express. You should also be aware that hotmail does not allow non-subscribers to download pop3 mail.

    What do you use to read your mail eg from your ISP's pop3?

    EDIT: Here's the link for the reason :- tackle hotmail/outlook spammers
