What kind of example is being set?

    Hi,

Most of you don't know me, as I am from another site in the dev shed network (ASPFree.com). I am one of the top contributors at that site. I have been happily contributing there for the last year and a half, and in Feb, I decided to see what this site was like.

I have to say, I'm a little taken aback. It seems as if there is a lot of negativity here. I'm not just talking about the rep system, but that too, seems as if some people are looking for a reason to de-rep; I'm talking attitude in general.

An online aquaintance of mine posted here a week or so ago, and kinda got ripped apart. In his post he remarked at how familiar this site looked. If you've ever been to ASPfree, you will notice that everything is exactly the same, even the header graphics, with the exception of the name, and the colors.

I realize there is some sort of unwritten competition between the two sites, but most of the regulars at both sites are IT professionals. As such, I would extend professional courtesy at the site I'm from. That, and I am not one who is ready to pounce on new posters.

I realize the rep system is in place to show agreement or disagreement, and it's perfectly fine to use it as such.

The question I keep asking myself is:

Is this site that inundated with spam, negative posts, and hostility to warrant such a reaction?

I mean, realistically, if anyone from this site were to come to our lounge and post what Dr. Rock posted here, I am almost positive that they would be welcomed, rather than blasted.

Heh, I got de-repped for saying my vehicle takes $40 to fill up. Does that mean sizeablegrin disagrees with that fact?

I can see getting de-repped for posting incorrect answers, or for posting antagonistic posts, but wow.

The bottom line is this: This site, as well as aspfree's site, are dependant upon the ads that they host. If you are losing members because of attitude, then you are potentially losing revenue. That, and all of these negative posts are indexed by Google.

The last question I have is:

Why is there no MS Access forum? (yeah, yeah, I see the database development)

Please do not click on the at the top right corner of this post. Due to my hippie upbringing, this would signify a society with classes, and I look at all beings as equal.

Access is mostly covered under VB and Database but when I have a stumper like I did last week I head over to aspfree myself :-)

I realize there is some sort of unwritten competition between the two sites
    There is?

Heh, I got de-repped for saying my vehicle takes $40 to fill up. Does that mean sizeablegrin disagrees with that fact?
    Yep. :-)

Most people go to the respective forums where they seek/provide help and stay out of the lounge and outhouse. The rest of us are just trolls.

Because MS Access is for wimps who eat quiche? :-)
I don't know, perhaps there are other places for MS Access.

Do your comments apply to the whole site? or just to the Lounge and Outhouse? The Outhouse is a pretty rough place, you've been warned. And the Lounge had an attack of clueless kiddies a while back, it was ugly. Ruined the mood of the place for a lot of folks. The kid would get banned, sign up again under a pseudonyum, post crap, ruin the karma, and get banned again. Repeat.

I find the real sections, Java, crypto, apache, DNS, etc to be very helpful, and some of the folks are amazing in their knowledge.

To be fair, he didn't de-rep you because it cost you $40 to fill
up your tank, he de-reped you because you posted a nonsense
comment in an otherwise sensible thread.

You may not recall, but I was the subject of some controversy
at ASP Free a while ago simply for using the "disagree" button
on a few members in the lounge. One of the guys there even
left the forum after a disagreement with me! So while you're
saying the negativity might be affecting things, I tend to think
that it's a much nicer and more rounded environment here at
the Shed than the whole Stepford Wives thing going on over
    at ASP Free!

There is a tendency for rep-seeking newbies to head directly to the Milestones threads in order to trigger a bandwagon orgy. I tend to discourage that.

One can call it "reputation" but reputation for technical expertise it ain't. True, knowledgeable contributors in the technical forums (what DevShed is really for) tend to have beaucoup less rep than we denizens of the low places.

    • Adrastea0413 agrees : Yep. The concept of the scales being used as "reputation" went out the window long ago. Now it's just a popularity contest.

I don't pounce on new posters, I pounce on stupid poorly written questions that can be solved by 1) waking the **** up in class and/or 2) Googling (on a side note, is "to Google" a verb?).

Dev Shed gets 1000x the people ASPFree gets. That also means we get more bull****. We reserve the right to be hostile.

Well, to be honest, I wasn't there (MPT) seeking rep. 'course I wasn't there to be de-repped either. And my "nonsense comment" was a reply to the previous comment of the same topic; therefore, both should have been de-repped according to your logic, correct?

As far as posting helpful posts and the like, I have been doing so in the Windows and Hardware Forums. Since there is no Access forum to speak, I can only share my knowledge on those topics, as I have been a tech professionally for the last decade, realistically for the last 25 years. Aye, I must be a quiche' eating wimp, as I help a lot of people out with Access. And yes, medialint, I know you go to ASP from time to time; the last being for a compile error.

I know the outhouse is rough. One could gather that from the name. So, I guess the rule here in the lounge is you better post exactly on topic or else you will get de-repped?

As far as the disagree button controversey Wigs..... the only controversey I remember is when you and AOG had a p*ssing match.

I can see pressing the disagree button when you actually disagree. To be honest, this has nothing to do with rep, but rather attitude. I could care less about rep. Heck I've even participated in de-rep fests at the other place.

I mean, if this has to with posting on topic, then so be it. I'm just saying that a lounge should allow a little more flexibility. I guess I should never have replied to the person who stated it took $70 to fill up his S-10, eh? I can see the err of my ways. Matter of fact, I guess I should probably ask if my post is ok to post from here on out, ok?

I think it's hypocritical to sit here and say I got de-repped for posting nonsense, when everyone posts nonsense here and there.

Just for the record, I'm not a wimpy, quiche' eating, rep seeking, newbie who posts nothing but nonsense. Sorry to take a critical word from each of your posts You're right Wigs, this truly is a well-rounded positive environment.

Only one person hit you for any (-) value. And only once. Even Arty doesn't attribute his issue with this to the whole forum. It's still more than offset by Ax's generous "welcome" so ...

    Flaming Hell!

Pissing match?! Lol. That was far from it as far as I'm concerned. I
did find it amusing that AOG sent me a PM afterwards apologising for

agreed......for the most part dev-shed is a professional forum.

However, it's a bit of a kick in the @55 when your intention is always to be humorous and helpful.

Let's face it, a person will only stick around where he feels welcome.

I mean, I come to the lounge to relax, have some fun, and occasionally reply to my take on things in life that are posted here. I'm just saying that $40 to fill up my Tracker wasn't that controversial of a reply to the previous comment which stated it took $70 to fill up his S-10.

I don't care about the rep what-so-ever, and yes, Ax's contribution was indeed generous. I was just curious as to the being quick to de-rep was attributed to spammers, sh*t stirrers, and kids being stupid?

Hence the question from the first post:
Is this site that inundated with spam, negative posts, and hostility to warrant such a reaction?
    Edit:
@Wigs: My bad, I did not see the derep for zeroefx.
