    Re: Passwords not *** in index.php3?

    If you are referring to:
    Now pick a password:<input name="password" type="TEXT" value="">

    The type, I believe, should be password, thus:

    Now pick a password:<input name="password" type="PASSWORD" value="">

    Re: user validation high overhead

    In response to:
    <br>
    <br>
    " In essense, I have to include the special code at the top and bottom of each document that I want to require user authentication on. This seems like a lot of work. "
    <br>
    <br>
    You are right. Maybe there is an easier way. Since you are using Apache, how about using Server Side Includes (SSI) include tag to insert the required code? That way you could create the required file and call it into the desired file at the top or bottom. This also has the desired effect of seperating content from form.
    <br>
    <br>
    Not familiar with SSI? I saw an introduction at <a href="http://bignosebird.com/ssi.shtml">bignosebird.com</a>.
    <br>
    <br>
    BTW, this might also work for those who use the Roxen <include> tag.

    Re: user validation high overhead

    I found a wonderful solution called mod_auth_mysql.

    I have a mysql database installed and was able to configure Apache's .htaccess files to refer to the mysql database for user authentication. From there, it was a simple issue of using php3 to create membership application forms.

    Jamie Dyer hey there..

    i think you must have input type="password".
    NOT input type="text"
    .

    Unable to connect for user personalization

    Hi

    this is a great article but when I try to run the CGI script (under debug) I get the following message:

    www.slashdot.org/slashdot.xml: can't connect to www.slashdot.org: connect_to fai
    led (bind: Can't assign requested address)

    Running the script outside of debug yields a kiss of death 500 code

    Have CHMOD'd the script. Looks fine under debug except for the webget. Any ideas? Guess I need to run webget.pl through debugger also?

    Thanks for any help!

    php version of headline grabber

    I was surprised to see Perl used as a headline grabber when PHP is perfectly capable of it. Here is a brute-force routine that will grab headlines from slashdot or any other site supporting RSS/RDF files.

    <!-- Code -->
    <p><pre><font color=#008000><xmp>

    /*
    Usage example:

    getrdf("http://slashdot.org/slashdot.rdf", 30);

    listrdf("slashdot.rdf");

    Bugs: Blocking code is a problem if the target site isn't reachable. This needs to be rewritten to open sockets and apply
    timeouts.
    */

    function getrdf($rdf,$agelimit)
    {
    // convert agelimit to seconds
    $agelimit *= 60;
    $timestamp = filectime(basename($rdf));
    $age = time() - $timestamp;
    if($age > $agelimit)
    {
    $fd = fopen($rdf,"r");
    $buf = fread($fd,32000); // // note 32K limit on rdf size
    fclose($fd);

    function makebullet($item)
    {
    $link = ereg_replace(".*<link>","",$item);
    $link = ereg_replace("</link>.*","",$link);
    $title = ereg_replace(".*<title>","",$item);
    $title = ereg_replace("</title>.*","",$title);
    if ($title)
    {
    echo "<li><a href=\"$link\">$title</a>\n";
    }
    }

    function listrdf($rdf)
    {
    $fp = fopen($rdf, "r");
    $slashdot = fread($fp, filesize($rdf));
    fclose($fp);

    // kill the crud at the top and bottom
    $slashdot = ereg_replace("<\?xml.*/image>","",$slashdot);
    $slashdot = ereg_replace("</rdf.*","",$slashdot);
    $slashdot = ereg_replace("[\r,\n]", "", $slashdot);
    $slashdot = chop($slashdot);

    // make an array and walk it, printing out the item
    $slash = explode("</item>",$slashdot);
    array_walk($slash, 'makebullet');
    }

    </xmp></font></pre><p>

    Re: Multiple Values in Cookies

    I just usually run multiple setcookie headers like this:

    <!-- Code -->
    <p><pre><font color=#008000><xmp>
    setcookie ("handle", "$handle", time()+200000);
    setcookie ("password", "$password", time()+50000);
    header ("Location: /");
    </xmp></font></pre><p>

    Re: Unable to connect for user personalization

    Hmm. I didn't use the perl myself, as I used text files containing jscript snippets from affiliates.excite.com. . they offer real news (not that tech news isn't real, but the excite was an easier, more demographic friendly option)

    Re: Cookie for shoppingcart?

    try using javascript to combine your variables into one string with a seperator
    <br>
    like:
    <br>
    $cookie="trollboy%password%data1%data2"
    <br>
    then have php parse out the variables
