    XML escaped from the zoo? Everybody run!

    Whoops, I thought XML was just another MS doodle to get more money from the ignorant pseudo-IT-technician... My wrong!
    <br>
    <br>
    Anyway, will it fulfill my wishes of what I expect from the successor to HTML?

    What the hell di I do with it ?

    Ok - this is a <truth>serious</truth> question & I am not trying to be sarcastic , I have read pages and pages of articles about XML , downloaded an editor and sample <whichAfter30or40LinesOfCodePrintedA5WordList>code</whichAfter30or40LinesOfCodePrintedA5WordList> etc etc etc - but I still can not figure out what I should do with XML & more importantly WHY ???? What is the whole point of the language apart from confusing me. I can not see what can be acheived with XML that can not be <spelling>acheived</?spelling> with several existing alternatives.Please tell me what I am Missing !

    Re: What the hell di I do with it ?

    I like the question. And the style in which it was asked. I think one of the downsides to the internet is that you become aware of hundreds of things you feel you need to know. Just look at the lefthand column of devshed.com to see what I mean.

    For example, what the hell is Zope?!?!

    Although I have not use XML for anything yet I have implemneted many and various projects that push data about and stuff it into something (database/files etc.) In my present poisition I'm even re-implementing the same project, with the same data - just at a new place.

    In this instance we are stuffing Perl structures into a MySQL db. However, I'm now getting into Java Servlets for my server side stuff and the Perl-centric data items are a potential pain.

    If only there was some common way of storing them, that expressed the relationships and structure of the data, and would be recognised by all the different language paltforms.

    Enter XML.

    I can now regenerate a new DB passing my original data through the Perl XML::Dump thing and then read it back with the right Java hoojamy.

    I know there's more to XML than just this but you wanted an example!

    Hope it helps,
    Chris

    online help

    Is XML good for technical writers who create online help files? can XML be converted to printed documentation? If so, are there any shareware or freeware applications I can try?

    Re: XML & Netscape

    Netscape 4.5 does not support XML code to the browser.
    You will need Netscape 6 pr1 or IE 5.0+.

    I am new to XML also, after having been coding HTML & DHTML for over 3 years now, it appears to me that XML less to do with the presentation of a given page, whereas the structure of the pages.

    Re: What the hell di I do with it ?

    Suprisingly, in this article there was no mention of XSLT, or an XSLT processor.

    XSLT: eXtensible Stylesheet Language for Transformation.

    http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt/

    Takes XMLdocs and XSLstylesheets and generates HTML, WML, and any other format depending on what XSLstylesheet you use.

    XML starts to make more sense if you get a handle on this.
