I had to know which was faster so I set up several identical html pages with about 200 lines, 15 strings to replace, with ten being pulled from MySQL. The MySQL vars are relevant since XTemplate supports array parsing while others force you to name each one separately.
The first page used very simple while loop for testing purposes:
$fp = @fopen($htmlpage, "r");
while ( !foef($fp))
$buffer = fopen($fp, 1024);
$buffer = str_replace('%time%', $time, $buffer);
$buffer str_replace('%example%', $example, $buffer);
$page .= $buffer;
That took 0.151 seconds
FastTemplate took 0.062 seconds
And XTemplate took 0.033 seconds
My conclusion: XTemplate is faster and provides more functionality.

Re: PHP script inside a template?
the whole point of FastTemplate and templating in general is that you keep ALL of your php code completely seperate from your site layout (HTML).
Otherwise there is no point using FastTemplate.

Re: Install example
if your using Fast Template version 1.1 and PHP4 then change line 213 to -
your getting this error because the script was written for PHP3 and alot has changed since then.

July 02, 2001 - Why separate presentation from logic? The simple answer to the question is, "It keeps things simple". If presentation wasn't separated from logic around your house, you'd have to be an electrician to replace light-switch covers. The same goes for large-scale web applications. Graphic designers shouldn't need to be software engineers in order to update the fonts in a web page. Separating logic from presentation makes that possible.
