    Database ?

    First : I really like XML and this comment is not something like "why is XML such a **** and doesn't do this and this for me".

    My question: How can XML help me with my database data?

    Mysql documentation :
    " We don't believe that one should have native XML support in the database, but will instead add the XML support our users request from us on the client side."

    What does this mean ? Should I parse XML's into normal relational base sistem, when I want to store xml's into database and then back into XML when I intend to use it ?

    Or should I put them in dir's like files, but then I loose the funcionality of the database (relations, strong simple queries).

    There you have it

    That is exactly what people would have you to do. Also, I recommend it. If you use XSL(T), DTD's etc., you don't really have a reason to store the data in its native XML format in the database. More importantly, if you store data in its Native XML format, how would you query it and repurpose it for general use and display on a Palm, Visor, CE, etc.

    There are XML databases that user XML based query languages but they are not nearly as robust or prolific as relational databases and thus don't really add any value to your use of XML.

    Hope this helps.

    I still don't get it ?

    What should I do ?

    a) use relational database to store my data and :

    -> parse the data from XML's to fit in the relational database so I can query them

    -> parse the data from database to fit in the XML to present the data

    b) store the data in the XML files in some directory and have problems to query the data

    c) the solution with a database that stores XML's in the database and can query them, doesn't exist in my database system (PostgreSQL or MySQL).

    Sablotron.

    I was just reading through the release notes on php4.1.0 and I found a bit you might find interesting. PHP has discontinued the support and distrubution of the sablotron extentions. They encourage users to move to the more robust XSLT extention. So this article isn't going to be very helpful in the future, except for XSL transformation logic XSLT is close enugh to the sablotron extention.

    Cheers Sam :)

    more robust XSLT extention?

    If not Sablotron, then what XSLT extension should I use?

    Thanks,

    Class 2 XML

    Here is a function that I wrote that will let you convert a class with data in it into a XML string. I use it with storing user data over page access like a logging system.

    more robust XSLT extention?

    The new extention an adaptation of the xslt and sablotron extentions. They reworked them into one and made it more powerful and faster. Look for it in the manual soon. PHP official droped subbort for sablotrn and it doesn't ship with php4.1.0. If you want to build a version that works with pp4.1.0 you could still use it. But they don't recomend that. Newbies to php + XML should not start learning sablotron ant the current time.

    Cheers Sam

    code for php-4.1.1

    Instead of using xslt_run() as suggested in this article, use xslt_process() ..

    example:

    $xmlfile = "person.xml";
    $xslfile = "person.xsl";

    $xh = xslt_create() or die("No XSLT handler available: aborted.");

    $result = xslt_process($xh, $xmlfile, $xslfile);

    echo $result;
    xslt_free($xh);

    XSL Transformation

    I've complied php.4.1.1 wtih the following

    './configure' '--with-apache=../apache_1.3.22' '--enable-sigchild' '--with-zlib' '--enable-ftp' '--with-gd' '--with-java=/usr/local/jdk1.3.1' '--with-oci8' '--with-pdflib' '--with-xslt-sablot' '--enable-xslt' '--with-expat'
    on my RH 7.2 box and I can not get any of the examples to work. All I get is
    <html><body></body></html>

    when I look at the resulting page source.
    Any idea why?

    Thanks
