Anyone here plan to develop a portal?
There is one company i known of who developed an portal using java portlets and currently they managed to get a governemnt agency to develop a system base on the portal architecture
i was thinking is developing a portal an viable business? instead of using java portlets if using php can i also do something like a portal? anyone care to shed some light on this? note that i am nt toking about CMS but more of personalized homepage for each of the user |

A portal is pretty much a specialized CMS if you think about it. Its key features follow the same format:
Allow pages/projects to be easily updated Allow pages/projects to be updated by authorized users Allow pages/projects to be personalized to an authorized user's preference ...etc... Given that there are a lot of PHP CMS's out there, I would guess that you should be able to find a PHP portal as well. PHPNuke, for one, is a highly used PHP portal system. |

Sure, if you configuring an existing portal to your needs doesn't make sense. Or just for the heck of it. Even if you don't see any immediate return on investing your time to create one for yourself, think about how much you will learn about existing systems while doing it.
There is always some value, it all just comes down to discipline and motivation. |
