Page 2 - Best editor with php

If you are 'trapped' in a Windows environment, but are at heart a Unixer, I recommend UltraEdit. Yes it actually costs something, but at $30, I don't think I have made a better investment in software.

It is incredibly customizable, and supports such things as FTP open/save as (so your file never even needs to reside on your Windows C: drive), Perl-style regular expressions, multiple project profiles, autocomplete, editable syntax-highlighting files, macros, multiple clipboards and a quite a few other niceties that make your coding more productive. (No, I don't work for the company, but in my dealings with the creator Ian D. Meade, he has been one heck of a nice guy.)

P.S. also, he told me he is considering a Linux port of UltraEdit. Let's all cast our vote

What's wrong with the win32 port of vim/gvim. That's what I use for text editing everywhere.

Dont' forget excellent free windows web tool HTML-Kit with support for php, perl, asp, etc. Supports plugins for extensions. Check www.chami.com!

I second Edit Plus, It has color coded syntax, Auto completion, and a no hassle ftp upload feature.

I recommend CodeCommander at http://codecommander.sourceforge.net

It's a nice X editor that has color support for most languages, incl. php, html, C etc...
(doesn't have intellisense)

jEdit is a VERY well done editor, and is java-based (read: cross platform)

For window$ only I recommend EditPlus.

For Linux there are some really good ones available - some are part of an IDE and some are stand alone.

IDE category - try Moonshine, or CodeCommander, or CodeForge

Editor only - FTE, nEdit and of course Jed

I've been using Homesite since version 3.0 (currently 4.5.1). It has many great features like extended search and replace, configurable color coding, undo, and built-in FTP. However, it can be frustratingly buggy. This is especially true with the FTP functionality which has caused me to lose work sometimes. I'm sticking with it hoping to see the bugs worked out soon.

I've used a couple of the other like UltraEdit, but the interface isn't as good. It takes too long to do something as simple as open a remote file. I also don't like being forced towards using the "Project" feature.

Xemacs - Works good, lasts longtime.

Good for Unices and Wins.

Get it, use it, love it.

Under Windows (my prefered coding environment) I use DreamWeaver 2 for prototyping my pages and getting the look right. I then move over to HTMLKit to integrate my PHP code into it. HTMLKit is great because it has both color highlighting and built-in PHP references.

Under Linux I'm using Amaya for prototyping (if anybody knows of product close to DreamWeaver please let me know) and CodeCrusader for my PHP coding

I vote for EditPlus 2. It does all, plus remote edit and no hassle ftp.

As a dedicated Mac user I use BBEdit its just what you need, a no frills easy to use reliable editor. However, on my Sgi, I use NEDIT with a php macro or XEMACS. Very powerful.Lots of windows users here , used one once but chucked it out in favour of a mac. I even use Linux on an old PC I have access to.
My advice on editors is to keep it simple. It will save you the hassle of stripping out the excess stuff that gets shoved in...

I've been using Homesite for the last few years and I'd always loved it, but 4.5 is rubbish, too buggy and can't deal with files > 1MB V well, also if the Network connection goes down, it crashes horribly.

If I'm *forced* to do conceptual stuff, then DW has never let me down. This is so rare though that I've forgotten how to use it

This weekend I'm finally 'upgrading' to Linux, from what this discussion has generated, Codecommander looks like it'll do what I want
