Calendar and Directory

I am considering adding two additional features to my site. The first is a calendar (like the one here in DevShed). Can anyone tell me if there is any calendar package which can be implemented?

The second is more challenging. My site is content driven, but I would like to set up a directory of relevant merchants. (Not a simple link farm).

I notice that online directories tend to have similar look and feel. You might say 'of course they do', but I'm wondering if there is any 'directory application' which can be implemented. In particular, I'm looking for something which would pass Google PR back to the listed sites.
