Hi All
I really need some advice from some senior web developers. I am looking to setup a website that I Will be updating regularly. I am considering using a CMS solution, but I am uncertain as to what CMS solution to consider. There are just so many out there & so many hosting options to consider. I do have a technical background but it is in the Networking & Architecture side of things. I am Willing to learn PHP & MYSql, but I need to get this solution up and run fast. If I need to look At another solution later because the Website has out grown the CMS product then so be it, that is Technology. I would just like some advice from some senior people that work with CMS Solutions just to point Me in the right direction so I can plan for the future of the Website and business. Here is what I am trying to accomplish and at some point all of this functionality is needed: - Windows Media Files (Streaming Audio) - Allow Flash Designs - Ability to use Templates (Monster Templates.com) - Paypal Integration - My Space Integration - Website Promotion Tools (Not a Must but Nice to Have) - Regular Basic Static HTML Site Features Also I always have friends asking me to design a website for them, but because of time constraints I have to turn them down. If I could get a CMS Solution that has a good CMS client side editor or, That can use Microsoft Word to do the design work and changes that would be great. Then I Wouldn’t mine building something for them. I just don't have the time to be updating there sites. Lastly from the hosting side of things is it possible to host many CMS Sites with one hosting Company, but each site is its own entity. It must be completely separate from other sites, (Mydomain.com) with user login & password, and can they share the bandwidth, and all other aspects Of web hosting? And of course it needs to be cost effective. In other words Cheap!!! I know this is alot ask of any product but I figure you guys would be the best people to point me in the right direction. Thanks Slim |

Most senior developers would probably write their own custom CMS or template system from scratch but as you are jsut starting out that wont be possible.
You can compare many different CMS systems at http://www.opensourcecms.com (they're all free) But it's always difficult to find a solution that does everything you want and nothing that you don't want. You shouldn't want people to use Microsoft Word to edit websites! It adds extra, invisible formatting characters that can break the code of the web pages. Word is the bane of websites everywhere, especially CMS sites Re: Hosting. You can host multiple domains on 1 IP address (each with their own control panel etc) - look at Reseller hosting plans. Those plans tend to include ALOT of disk-space and bandwidth - enough to cater for many domains!
