I am a team of 1 that runs a successful ecommerce website. When I came to this company 18 mo. ago, their website was running on an out of the box ecommerce solution. I learned the language it was written in (.net) and have improved it tremendously and also fixed many bugs.
The issue is that this out of the box solution is not very flexible and terribly inefficient. We have problems with memory leaks and cpu running at 100% because of this application. As our traffic grows, I don't think that this application can handle the increasing load. I began writing a new e-commerce site by following along in a book (in .net) but I am not sure this is the way to go for a few reasons including, being a team of 1, this will take a long time and I have never done this before. I am also looking at other ecommerce platforms. I would need an open-source solution that I could modify and that was efficient and not too bulky. It would have to be feature rich and affordable. A couple solutions that I have looked at are ElasticPath and Marketlive. These are both Java solutions and would require learning the language (I have a computer science degree so I dont think this would be too difficult). I am looking for advice / suggestions. |

Hi,
I dont know how suitable for your needs these would be but heres an option you may want to have a look at. It is done in php, which IMHO is far easier to learn then Java. OSCommerce Displeaser

I have seen many references to OSCommerce in this forum, but unfortunately, I think we are more advanced than this solution (from what I have seen). I think it would be a step backward as far as features go. Also I would have to learn PHP, which is not a big problem.
I agree with you on Java though. I can't even figure out what I need to download / install to get started. There are too many choices. |
