Help advise the resources to develop the software

hi,

i'm new joiner. I'm undergradaute student.
Currently i've a project to implement a software (database application).
Like hardware, software is becoming more [I]network centric[/I].
Many companies are adding Web font-end (like: intranet or web-service) to broaden access to emp, cust, sup.

So, instead of delopying an application itself, i do need tightly integrate various componet/functions/features to facilitate communication as stated above: web service/intranet.

This application classified by > 1 user, however must scalability & with 3-tier architecture.

I preferring using VB.6 and SQL server to write the application.
I have some beginner knowledge about HTML, CGI, javascript
I learnt networking before.

This project is significance challege for me. A building such application is complex undertaking even using a VB, i know.
Beisdes, do needs manage the environment tools very well.

Unluckly, i dont have much experience how to integrate the componets of application dbs with web development & network linking. i had create a stand-alone application database before but no network sharing.

I looking for some in-practise/on-hand software dev ref book which have above similar case study esp enforce using the environment tools.

Please feel free to recommend the book if you have it.
kindly sharing/advise the situation if you are expertise of s/w dev.
