Question how to protect info on subscription only websites?

Hi,

First time posting on the forum..hope you can help.
I'm approaching this from very much a 'layman's perspective',so apologies if what I say isn't technically sound (!)

Idea
------
I'm thinking about setting up a website ,(separate to my existing biz and website) which is a useful 'how to' review/guide.
This consists of info which is all available in the public domain,(so there is no issue of copyright infringement) , but the way in which I intend to collate and offer people a thorough step-by-step review of info is special.
Currently,if you wanted to find this info you would have to do a lot of research, but my intention is to have the info presented in such a way that the hard work is done for you.
Ideally,I would like to get people to pay for this info, either by subscribing to a specific segment or the site as a whole, and similarly offer advertising to relevant parties who would benefit from having these interested people get in contact with them.

Problem
---------
My main concern is that, if I allow people to access this info ,it will get 'knocked off' by other people who will simply steal the info and create either the same/very similar format to myself, using the info i have collated which will result in my info being devalued because it has been copied.

Is there any way I can try to stop people doing this?
I was initially thinking that if I noted the IP addresses of people subscribing to multiple segments, this would alert me to the possibility of someone trying to copy the info - but this does not allow for genuine people who want to subscribe to multiple segments , nor does it stop unscrupulous people making separate subscriptions from different pc's.

I don't even know whether the format could be patented (CAN formats be patented? if they're not processes/products?) esp. as it's info in the public domain already, but I'm wondering how I can prevent other biz's trying to scupper my biz .

Any help /top tips would be appreciated
thanks,

BingoStarr

Use the GNU liscence. But there is always the risk.
