Need open source social networking platform

Hey,
I'll be developing a social networking site, much like yelp.com, where users have their own profiles, are able to rate businesses, etc. I've been digging around to see if any of the popular free platforms might serve as a good base to do this, but it's tough to tell at this point. Elgg seems like a possible solution.

I would consider paying for a software package as well, as long as I'd be in control of the code. Preferably, would like something LAMP based.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Please offer any opinions.

I know some people have developed social sites using Drupal. Haven't done it myself though.
