Open Source Customisable Blog Install??

I know that people have asked about blog software in this forum already, but I'm after some feedback on blog software with more specific features.

I fairly confident tackling PHP, along with the usual XHTML and CSS. I recently hacked to bits an install of phpBB on one of my domains. I am now looking for a similar challenge with a weblog to get it how I want it.

So these are the features I'd like:
- Install on your own domain (as with phpBB)
- PHP / MySQL
- Open Source (maybe?)
- Customisable with the knowledge (so doesn't necessarily require a CMS to change the look and feel, or some of the functionality)
- FREE!
- Image uploading/linking allowed
- Password protected
- Support for extensions and MODs
- Option for RSS feeds

and any other features people think are cool...

I'd appreciate any feedback, good/bad experiences, or links to what people have done.

WordPress has all of that and more. I highly recommend it. It's what I use on my blog.
