    Question Web Site Development Recommendations

    Good Afternoon folks,

    I want to develope a website for my softball team. I currently track stats, schedule and various other items with excel. Obviously this is a very tedious process three times a week. After each game I take the score book, record the game results, (individual player stats), the spread sheet calcs the required stats and adds them up for team totals. I create a html page with excel, open the source code and copy/paste into my current web page. I then have to re-format these tables to look right. What a pain right?

    This is where I ask for suggestions and what not.. what would be the best way to open my web pages, edit them but direct input of the stats and have the data stored within the site so individual players can look at their own page and see what their stats are up to date and find team leaders easily?

    Here is my example:

    Code:
    <div align="center">
              <table width="50%" border="0" align="center">
                <tr>
                  <td width="214"><div align="center"><strong><font color="#CCCCCC" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">
                      <label>Player Name</label>
                      </font></strong></div></td>
                  <td width="50" align="center" valign="middle">
                    <div align="center"><font color="#CCCCCC" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong>AB</strong></font></div></td>
                  <td width="50" align="center" valign="middle">
                    <div align="center"><font color="#999999" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong>H</strong></font></div></td>
                  <td width="50" align="center" valign="middle">
                    <div align="center"><font color="#CCCCCC" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong>R</strong></font></div></td>
                  <td width="50" align="center" valign="middle">
                    <div align="center"><font color="#CCCCCC" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong>RBI</strong></font></div></td>
                  <td width="60">
    <div align="center"><font color="#CCCCCC" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong>AVG</strong></font></div></td>
                </tr>
                <tr>

    This may be a case of "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" - but, I really think your best bet would be a web database, if your host allows such a thing. Instead of entering all the info into excel, then importing it and fiddling around with the formatting, you'd then just enter it once (into the database). All the formatting would be handled by a separate php or perl script. (Or some other server-side language, I'm not knowledgeable in that area. My weapon of choice is php/mysql, so that's all I know.)

    Unfortunately, this may require a steep learning curve for you, if you don't already have knowledge of database and interface scripting. The first web database I set up took about two months of intensive learning and experimenting. This was many years ago, and lot of the web-tutorials I used have disappeared, but here are a few resources to get you started:

    A nice, simple "overview" type tutorial:
    http://www.watersgulchdigital.com/ar...al_gbook1.html

    A database web page interface generator:
    http://www.xlinesoft.com/phprunner/

    A link to the book I found most helpful:

    ebook format
    http://ebook30.com/web-development/p...d-edition.html

    paperback format:
    http://www.amazon.com/PHP-MySQL-Web-...166/ref=sr_1_1

    Good luck!

    (edited to make the links actually link!)

    Sweet

    Thanks so much. I guess I have a lot of reading to do. Actually my provider allows me one database perdomain I have so I have that I need to see what it takes to access it but shouldn't be too difficult.

    Thanks again. I am sure I will be back in a few days with questions about what I have learned and about methods that really work!

    You have a great weekend!

    Time to change the web host, move to PHP and MySQL , it will make your life easy.
