123-reg.co.uk help

Hi all,

I have bought a domain name from 123-reg.co.uk - i think this is possible but not sure how to do it so i hope you can help me.

So far in my nameservers in the 123-reg account i have the nameservers given to me by the host, but i want to create my own as i have a reseller account to host my own sites and familys.

I want to be able to have my own nameservers for the domains that are hosted within my reseller account.

I tried go to the nameservers modification section under my 123-reg account adding...

ns1.mydomain.co.uk and ns2.mydomain.co.uk it then asked me to enter the IP addresses i wanted the nameservers to point to, which i put in. It seemed to work for that domain but when i went to edit another one of my domains nameservers i put in ns1.mydomain.co.uk and ns2.mydomain.co.uk but it didnt work for this account...

Please help me get my custom nameservers sorted.

Thank you.

Welcome to Dev Shed.

You have a reseller account for what?

Where have you created the nameservers?

What IP did you point the nameservers to?

What OS are you running on the server?

I bought a reseller so that i can have different websites hosted, i know i didn;t need too, however i wanted too

I tried to create the nameservers in the 123-reg control panel:
i logged, clicked modify domain > change nameservers > put in the nameservers i wanted to create (ns1.mydomain.co.uk, ns2.mydomain.co.uk)> then entered the IP addresses for each nameserver -- My host told me the ip addresses to point each one too.

The OS is linux.

Do you have a server setup though? Is the reseller account a dedicated server, or just a web host reseller account?

Pointing ns1.yourdomain.co.uk to an IP address doesn't mean much if the nameservers aren't created anywhere. You need to create these on a server somewhere. You need to setup some sort of DNS server, whether on your own server or on a dedicated server. If this is a dedicated server, what DNS server program are you running?

You can't just on the fly create a nameserver pointing to a nameserver.

You will need to setup A records, NS records, and if you choose, MX records... and then you can use those NS records for the various domains that you host.

IF you can help me by giving me steps how to set up the DNS zones and the A, NS and MX records it would be greatly appreciated.

I just have a web reseller account therefore use WHM and cpanel

Well, have you even tried searching the forum yet? There's a great sticky entitled Bet you want to setup a DNS server, huh?. Go through that link and follow the steps. You will need to have a server, whether your own or a dedicated one somewhere. You'll need to know what OS and what DNS server program you'll be using.

If after running through all of that you have problems, then we'll try to get you some help...
