A Few Generic Nameserver / DNS Questions

Firstly, apologies if this is a bit of a "newbie" post, but we all have to start somewhere

I bought myself a dedicated server (with ServerMatrix) a couple of days back and since then have been following some advice to make the box more secure. Now that I'm fairly happy, the real work can begin.

The problem which is currently causing me problems is that of nameservers.

I'm looking to set up my own nameservers, so I've gone into WHM and set ns1.purelyartistic.com and ns2.purelyartistic.com as the primary and secondary nameservers, selected 'Assign IP address' for each, and then 'Add an A Entry for this Nameserver'. This worked fine for both entries.

Here's my first question: for ns1 is selected the main IP address of the server. Will this prove to be a problem, or should it work fine regardless?

I have added 'A' name entries with my domain registrar for both ns1 and ns2 and set the IPs for each to be the same as the IPs WHM assigned. Are 'A' Entries the correct type to use (see image below). I'm still waiting for these changes to propagate.

URL

Have I done the right thing in order for these nameservers to work or will I need to take further steps for them to function correctly?

To make things worse, the domain 'purelyartistic.com' is currently hosted elsewhere. Although it is my intention to move the site to my server, I'd prefer to wait until I'm sure that the nameservers are functioning correctly. Should I change the nameserver entries for purelyartistic.com immediately in order to prevent problems?

Anyway, sorry for the volume of questions, I've been trawling through Google search after Google search and thread after thread and can't find any definitive answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,

Ant.

ahm, yeah, I guess things are fine. I'm not familiar with your registrar or anything, and this whole 'A' entries bit is kinda wierd. Usually it's called creating or registering name servers. Have no clue what WHM is.

But shoot, if nothings broken, then I don't have anything to say really.

Thanks for the reply SilentRage.

I'll give the nameserver entries another day or two to propogate and see what happens.

WHM = Web Host Manager (features).

Thanks again.
