A few questions for a newbie...
Hey Everyone!
Good day! How Are You? Lets get started, shall we? Okay, I just finished setting up Apache (Phew, its done!), and found that the most simple problems can be so hidden, they turn into massive complicated matters. But, I was wondering, what can be done with a DNS server? Can I have "www.myname.com"? And, how complicated is it to set up? I am behind a router, and running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 1 & 2 installed. Further more, is a DNS server free. If its not, then just answer this, and I will forget about it. I don't have any movey to spend extra, considering I just bought Flash MX2004, the most expensive program that I've ever gotten in my life! Thanks for your answers! |

To create a domain for use you need to pay money. No way around that, and if there is, somebody needs to start talkin. To get a domain hosted on your server or with somebody else, that's easy to do for free. Here's your options:
Self-Hosting: The only DNS server I'd recommend to anybody is BIND. It is free, used by most people out there, and is powerful enough that it is used by the DNS root servers. There are loads of support for that server because of this. Alternative Hosting I've compiled a list of domain hosts who offer free or partially free services. This list include some core features about each hosting plan: http://www.dollardns.org/compare.html

This is the preferred method if your DNS needs to be fixed/setup fast and you don't have the time to bounce messages back and forth on a forum. Also check your TOS for your ISP... if you are using a local cable/dialup/DSL you are not typically suppossed to be hosting servers.

Although I'd ignore the TOS anyway. Bans on hosting servers is cause of ISP's wanting to cut down on their upload bandwidth usage. It's expensive. However a DNS server takes extremely little bandwidth. Shoot, a 56k user could host a DNS server if bandwidth was the only concern.
