Accessing internet sites via networked clients HELP!
Hey all, I've recently set up a win2k server, with dns, everything works fine apart from the client machine's, When i try to access the internet from a client computer on the network, i get dns errors, The clients dns server is 192.168.0.1, This is the ip of my server, i've added all my ISP'S dns servers to the farward Lookup Zones, but i'm still unable to access the sites.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced Ryan p.s I'm completely new to dns |

before we start analyzing your DNS configuration, are you sure it isn't routing problems? In other words, can the client computer access the internet using IP addresses?

Tell me if I got this right. You have a server at 192.168.0.1 and it acts as the gateway between the internet and your private network. On this gateway server you also have a dns server. This gateway also has 2 network cards and one of them has your public IP address. Browsing the internet works from this computer. The gateway server is windows 2000. The client computer is also windows.
So paste me the result from the following dos command on both computers: C:\>ipconfig /all |

lookin good. Seems the reason the gateway server works while the client doesn't is cause the gateway doesn't even use the dns server on it, but the client is configured to use ONLY the gateway as a dns server with no backups.
Which means the dns server on the gateway either isn't running, not accessible due to firewalls, or not allowing recursion. So, from the client computer, I want you to do the following command: C:\>nslookup www.yahoo.com Show me the response. |

nslookup info
C:\>nslookup www.yahoo.com
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existent domain *** Default servers are not available Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.0.1 *** UnKnown can't find www.yahoo.com: Non-existent domain I'm not totally familiar with this, but my domain name is trance-gen.com, when setting up AD, it did say it cna't find it or something familiar, but i assumed this was because my net connection was down(wasent patched for msblaster). Thanks Ryan |

alrighty, so the server is accessible and running. So now we check the server config. If this is BIND, then show me "named.conf". Otherwise, if it is Microsoft DNS Server then show me a screenshot or something of your forward zones.

I'm Using the microsoft dns server, Heres a screen shot. I've hidden my external ip from it.
Thanks Ryan Note:I tried both a query and a recursive query test from the monitoring tab in properties, but both failed, it gave no indication of why. |

url returns: "Cannot find server"
I returned from my trip, so if you want to visit the IRC again, I'll most likely be active. All you must do is speak and I'll hear a beep. It really is much easier for me to help people using "Microsoft DNS Server" when I can talk to them in real time. |
