Any chance that this will actually work?
I’ve been tasked with getting DNS setup for the intranet at work. The current network is mostly NT4 servers, with a few 2000 servers. The server that has been chosen to be the DNS server is a 2000 server, which will also be the intranet web server and the gateway to our ISP. Right now the only things running on the server is are an internet use monitoring software and a web based help desk. I believe the PDC is an NT4 machine, and we are not running active directory or DHCP. The only use we have for DNS is to resolve web site addresses on the intranet. No internet traffic will see our DNS, and we use out ISP’s DNS servers for outbound traffic.
I have attempted to setup DNS on the 2000 server, but it doesn’t work. After reading through this forum, as well as some others, it appears that this setup is not ideal, and probably will not work. It seems like putting DNS on another server (maybe NT4, Linux is pretty much out of the question) would be a better idea. Does anyone have any suggestions and/or can point me toward some good resources? Thanks in advance. |

ISC BIND compiles and runs on Windows 2000. Have you tried using that, instead of the Windows DNS server?

Anyone who tells you Microsoft DNS on 2k is not up to snuff is full of Sh**. Pardon my english. This is a simple senario and should only envolve installing DNS on the 2k server E.G. Add-Remove Programs-Networking Services-DNS, and then setting your workstations etc to use the 2k server for DNS E.G. TCP/IP setting-specify DNS server to use. If this setup is not working you will need to ensure a few things
1. The 2k server has internet access. 2. The list of root servers exist in the DNS config. E.G. DNS Console-Properties for your server-Root Hints. 3. The DNS Server properties are set to listen on all IP's E.G E.G. DNS Console-Properties for your server-Interfaces. DNS properties can be found by opening the DNS management console and right clicking on your server. Sam Land http://www.dyndnsservices.com |
