"authoritative" name servers
I have a web site which is being hosted by myhost.com, and when I query the host's name server, ns1.myhost.com, it says that it is "authoritative" for my domain, mydomain.com. At the registrar for mydomain.com, I decided to you use the registrar's name servers because I have control over the DNS entries, which I do not at my host. When I query the registrar's name servers, they also claim to be "authoritative" for my domain.
Is it a problem to have two different names servers claim to be "authoritative" for the same domain? After all, the DNS records are not identical, since I can and have altered the DNS records at one of the two places. I also have a concern about how someone who wishes to send me e-mail might fare. At my registrar's name servers, I have entered an additional MX record which does not appear in the records at my web host, because I don't have control of those records. When the outgoing mail server of my friend in Australia attempts to send e-mail to me, which "authoritative" name server will be used, and how can I assure that every one on the net will see the authoritative server I wish them to see, which contains the DNS records I want to be used? |

"Is it a problem to have two different names servers claim to be "authoritative" for the same domain?"
I queried "ns1.myhost.com" and it is not authoritative for the domain "mydomain.com". Rather ns1.mydomain.com through ns4.mydomain.com ARE authoritative for the domain "mydomain.com". Everything I look at says that the ns1-4 mydomain.com servers are the only servers out there that are authoritative for that domain. So either you've fixed the problem, or you're wasting my time giving false information from which I can't diagnose a problem. I cannot answer your question. It might be a problem or it might not be.

I apologize..I wasn't trying to waste your time. On other boards I frequent, it is concerned "poor etiquette" to give actual information (email addresses, domain names...apparently that's not the case here. So, those were examples, not actual information. The actual domain is: camner.us The web host's name server is: ns6.personalsites.org One of the name servers set at the registrar is ns1.sitelutions.com Using the dns tools at network-tools.com, both name servers claim to be authoritative. And, they have slightly different information (no MX record at ns6.personalsites.org, for example). Is this a problem? If so, how is it resolved? Again, I apologize if I didn't observe the prototols of this board. |

Ah yes, I had a bit of an attitude there. Most people give ya a link to some page describing the importance of giving details rather than obfuscated information. Sorry about that.
But I looked into your setup and there's no danger of the old host being used in queries. It is strongly recommended though that you close down your account with the old host though - or remove your zone from it, whichever. |
