Caching DNS question
I'm thinking of setting up a caching DNS server to help improve performance with resolving external sites. I was hoping SilentRage may have some good tutorials or resources I could be pointed to.
What I'm thinking is this: We run squid proxy to help cache web pages through out the domain. I'm thinking it may be mest to jsut put the DNS caching on the same machine as the proxy, but could use another machine if needed. Currently the proxy machine performs fine and there is plenty of left over resources to run a named service. Does anyone have any links for maybe best practices for this. If it matters the proxy is running on Suse 9.1. Thanks Bruce |

Here you go. An example named.conf.

So the allow recursion = yes is really the only difference in setting up a caching server? In the example you did not set up any zones. Would it be better to add my domain zones as slaves or just let it cache them too? I'm curious about the DNS servers set up on the proxy server. I guess I should have the proxy's address as first and then add one or two of my other DNS servers in to handle requests the proxy does not know.
Thanks |

If you want to add masters or slaves, it all doesn't matter. Alternatively you can setup forward zones so that the server always specifically queries the server you want for a given domain. Certainly use forward zones instead of masters/slaves if it isn't going to be the server hosted for that domain at the registrar.
