Can't resovlve www.microsoft.com
I can't resolve www.microsoft.com from within my Windows 2000 domain. I can resolve other DNS addresses (www.yahoo.com and www.msn.com for example) and I can ping the IP address (derived by pinging from outside my domain). I don't have any filters to block ANY outgoing addresses. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Which of the following links work for you:
http://microsoft.com http://msdn.microsoft.com http://63.211.66.115 (should return 400 Bad Request) In addition, what does the following console command return: nslookup www.microsoft.com

The URLs respond with "The page cannot found". The IP responds with "Bad request" and the nslookup returns the following:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>nslookup www.microsoft.com Server: specDNS1.specializedservicing.com Address: 192.168.0.210 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to specDNS1.specializedservicing.com timed-out C:\> |

I would like to make some queries to your DNS server in experimentation. Could you open up your router to allow incoming UDP and TCP requests to your DNS server. Apparently "specDNS1.specializedservicing.com" resolves to an IP but I'm not able to access that server.
I would also like to see a successful request. What's the response to: nslookup www.yahoo.com |

The response for www.yahoo.com and www.msn.com is:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>nslookup www.yahoo.com Server: specDNS1.specializedservicing.com Address: 192.168.0.210 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.yahoo.akadns.net Addresses: 216.109.118.68, 216.109.118.69, 216.109.118.76, 216.109.118.67 216.109.118.77, 216.109.118.71, 216.109.118.73, 216.109.118.78 Aliases: www.yahoo.com C:\>nslookup www.microsoft.com Server: specDNS1.specializedservicing.com Address: 192.168.0.210 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to specDNS1.specializedservicing.com timed-out C:\>nslookup www.msn.com Server: specDNS1.specializedservicing.com Address: 192.168.0.210 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.msn.com Addresses: 207.68.171.244, 207.68.171.245, 207.68.171.247, 207.68.172.234 207.68.173.244, 207.68.173.254 C:\> I know you're trying to help with my problem, but I can't open the firewall for access. Are you using BIND? If so, what version? If not, I give up.

We're using Microsoft's DNS 5.2.3790.0, thanks for the help anyway though.

The problem with Microsoft DNS server is that it likes to get its hands into stuff without you even knowing. It likes to interface with Active Directory and who knows what else, so that many times when people have a problem it's not even related to dns server configuration.
