Can view my website but can't ping it

Hi,

I am thinking this is a DNS problem, if not then any direction would be greatly appreciated.

I have a DNS server behind a router which forwards TCP/UDP port 53 to the DNS server on the local network. I have set it up to control the domain names i have. I have a dynamic IP so have a DynDNS name which points to my router >> DNS Server which acts as the name server. I then use CNAME records to point to the webserver (again using a DynDNS name - have port 80 forward on router too).
This has all worked fine in the past - nothing on the servers or router has changed. However, i have suddenly found problems when my VPN stopped working (which connects through a domain name my DNS controls). I think it is an issue of timing out when trying to connect. I can view all my websites and all the domains work fine except i cannot ping or do a traceroute from outside the network. I also tried connect using telnet through port 80 and 1723, doesn't seem to do it but not entirely sure.

This is strange and surely should not be doing this?

Very stumped,

Thanks, Michael

If all domains and such work fine, then it's probably a networking related issue. I've asked a mod to move it over there where you may be able to receive better assistance.

I agree with hiker, but let's be sure. You said that to connect to the VPN, you have to use a domain name. That domain name probably resolves to an IP. So have you tried using telnet to connect to the IP and the appropriate port? If that times out, too, then I would look for another explanation besides DNS.

The domain name i use for vpn does resolve to an IP (it does it a long way though, has a CNAME which points to a DynDNS domain name which points to the IP). I have tried connecting to the domain using telnet on port 1723. It doesn't seem to do much, i have to interrupt it but when i stype 'status' it then says connected. The vpn domain name resolves properly in a web browser. Could it be anything to do with my ISP? I can connect to other vpns using my ISP's connection but is it possible they might do something to block VPN's in?

Thanks

Is the domain pointing to the right IP? Perhaps your dynamic DNS service broke down.

Well, still can't ping and i'm not entirely sure if telnet is connecting but VPN is now working, i don't know why because nothing has changed, but it is. So everything is actually working appart from the fact that it can't be pinged which is no problem at all.

Many thanks for your suggestions, sorry for posting something so weird.

Michael
