Creating Nameserver?

Quote:
So login to your registrar and look for an option to register a name server. They might also call it creating "hosts" (godaddy for example). They may call it creating name servers. Whatever they call it, you need to assign an IP address to hosts like "ns1" and "ns2". Most registrars allow you to specify the same IP for both ns1 and ns2. Most registrars require you to setup at least 2 dns servers for your domain.

this is from the sticky thread "Bet you want to setup a DNS server huh?"

I dunno if I am being dumb or there is more to it...

I have a domain name registered with 1and1.com (they got .us @ $2.99 ) and I don't see any option called "hosts" or create nameservers.... do you mean create a subdomain?
like ns1.mysite.com and then edit its dns settings...? (I don't think so though)

While writing this post I logged onto another site where I registered another domain name and see that option for nameservers.

So I guess that means that 1and1.com doesn't provide the nameserver feature...?

Also, if I setup a DNS for a domain name "mysite.com" then can I use it for domains like someothersite.com, someothersite01.com?

I don't know if or how to register name servers at 1and1. Maybe they're cheap for a reason...

If you can manage to register your name servers, then and only then can you use the name server domains to host other domains. For example, you can't go to godaddy.com and register a domain and try to set ns1.1and1domain.com as the nameserver if you haven't registered it first.

If you try to create the name servers and want to make sure, use my Whois Direct for a name server lookup. You could also contact 1and1 to find out how to register name servers.

Yes. You can use the same nameservers to be authoritative for multiple domain names.
