DNS clarification questions`
I have a couple of qwerky questions about BIND
a) Is it bad syntax for Upper Case Letters in a DNS Zone record? i.e.: Example.Com.Zone b) Once I get my server running, how long until my BIND settings propagate? I have a parked page that I want to migrate to my own BIND server, but I wonder how long it takes from i) initial setup of BIND to propagate and ii) how long it takes to propagate after you do a DNS xfr. thanks, Frog

a) Not bad syntax at all. It's completely pointless to use uppercase letters in domain names, and those letters will remain uppercase in most circumstances, but it won't break anything.
b) mmm, depends on the circumstances. propagation can take anywhere from instantaneous to 2 days depending on what exactly you're changing.

thanks for your quick response.
I am using your tutorial and the info from Swelltech.com for WEBMIN to put this together. I am curious : I have a ns1.FedoraDocs.com but how dow I setup an ns2? do I create a slave zone? [btw I did make a rev file for my zone] thanks, frog |

only create a slave zone on a second, and entirely separate server if you have one.
Otherwise you need to just set both ns1 and ns2 to the same IP as I described in the tutorial. If you have multiple IPs, you could set a different IP per domain. |

I just tried to move my DNS at GoDaddy to my DNS and it is saying not valid DNS
I did a DIG and it returned this: dig: Couldn't find server 'n1.FedoraDocs.com': Name or service not known Do I need to wait until my DNS servers propagate? Also, If I set my DNS entry to be my domain and it is also listed at GoDaddy will that create errors resolving the host? thanks |

Have you registered your name server domains with Godaddy yet? (Godaddy calls it creating "hosts").

No I haven't...I was in my control panel, but didn't see anything about registering 'Hosts'.
I will double check. |
