DNS for LAN
alright, i use tinydns whenever possible so i know alittle about it. my goal is to make it so that when someone on my lan types "stats" into there browser it directs them to http://192.168.1.5/stats (my cs apache server). I have a linksys router that acts as a dhcp server and it has settings to change the default dns server that is given out to the computers. is this achieved throught a local dns cache server? i've triedn setting up tinydns and adding the following to /service/tinydns/root/data
.stats:192.168.1.5 +stats:192.168.1.5 then i pointed on of the computers dns settings to this computer, restarted, typed stats in the browser and no go. Any suggestions or more info needed? |

Can you ping stats?
Setting up an internal dns server just for this seems like alot of work, what about using thehosts file? |

hosts file sits on each on computer and resolves names to ip addresses.
On windows machines normally found in windows directory do a search for hosts. The hosts file is normally used for smaller networks though, as keeping up with each machine can be pain. |

cannot access the server thru name
Hi,
I am new to this forum and do not know if I can ask this question here. Apologies if I am not following the rules, but I have a problem similar to this. I have entered the url of the internal machines in the hosts file, like 192.168.x.x delta #this is the delta server 192.168.y.x gamma #this is the gamma server. However when I type the url, URL, I am redirected to the buy domians site. I am not using a proxy. Thanks in advance Indian 2k |

trying ping
So if you ping delta what does it return?
Can you ping the actual ip addresses? What happens if you http://delta when not connect to the internet? |

the easiest way to get your answer is asking for him to paste the results of "ping delta". The moment we see that we know if it's a resolution error or something else.
