Dns Frequent Error
Hi, I am running a windows 2000 DC and I keep getting this error message. The part that bothers me is that it works for a while and then it goes down again. I can't figure out why and I would like to prevent it , not just restart the dns server, flush the cache or reinstall the DynamicDns in the DNS Server.
Here are the details and I would really love some help on this issue. Sincerely, Tony! Event Type: Warning Event Source: NETLOGON Event Category: None Event ID: 5773 Date: 10/18/2004 Time: 2:41:58 AM User: N/A Computer: WIN2KSERVER Description: The DNS server for this DC does not support dynamic DNS. Add the DNS records from the file '%SystemRoot%\System32\Config\netlogon.dns' to the DNS server serving the domain referenced in that file. Data: 0000: 2c 23 00 00 ,#.. |

Here's some questions:
Does this file exist? %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\netlogon.dns What domain is "referenced in that file"? What is the results for: ipconfig /all Are you locally hosting the domain on your computer? Are you using Microsoft DNS Server?

To answer your questions :
1. My file is pointing to my server in this case win2kserver.win2k.server.net 2. Ipconfig /all on the desktops in the network give all the correct info. It is seeing the dns address to the server and it is being assigned by the dhcp server correctly. 3. Yes, this is being hosted on this computer locally. 4. It is MS DNS , which in my opinion sucks, because I seem to get this error message often. My DNS works fine and then when it feels like it pulls this crap. Thanks for your help on this situation, and hope we could find not only a fix, but a cause for this problem! |

When I ask for results from a command, could you just give them to me? Many times people think something isn't wrong or is wrong with something, when that just isn't the case. But I feel that your ipconfig is probably ok.
Could you attach the zone file netlogon.dns for me. Yes yes, the contents may seem irrelevent and accurate, but I'm verifying your story that the zone name is "win2kserver.win2k.server.net". It's an odd zone name to me. |

I've attached the netlogon.dns as netlogon.txt.
I have also attached my dns screenshot. thanks for all your help. On another note, what situation would cause for this happen ? I mean, I just cant understand how something is working and without messing with settings or changing anything the dns server configuration gets borked. THanks for all your help! |

You're assuming that things aren't borked even when things are running smoothly. Misconfigurations have a tendency to only cause problems when they feel like it. Don't worry, after I peg down the problem (if I do), I'll be explaining it in detail. Right now I'm keeping my hunches to myself.
![]() So open up the properties for that zone "win2k.server.net". Tell me what file its record information is stored in. |

no sweat. In that screenshot you gave me there's a "win2k.server.net" in the left hand hierarchical list. Right-click on that name and pull up the properties for it. You will be presented with a child window with several tabs. Poke around in that thing until you come across a filename. Tell me that filename.

Well, when I right click I get properties and then I get TABS , name servers , General, SOA , Security, Zone transfers, WINS. Which one would you be looking for ? I really do not see where you would be looking for ? Sorry, but I really cannot see a file or browse button . The only link I have is for the pointer that links to my server 192.168.0.1=win2kserver |

Just look a little harder. You can't miss it. You're able to change the name of the file and everything.

I just realized why I haven't been able to find the file. I forgot to add, my DNS is AD integrated, therefore there is no standard primary file location. Sorry, I did not specify this at the beginning. |

That doesn't matter. All zones has a file name. Where else do ya think this information is stored when you shut down the computer? I hunted down a screenshot to point this out for ya.
http://www.amirboroumand.com/w2kad.pdf Scroll down to page 18. There's a screenshot of a window saying "dpetri.net Properties". It's on the General tab. There's a text box called "Zone file name". Tell me what yours says. |
