DNS Help
Hello
I recently started hosting my own site, I was using web host providers but they had problem with me having a download section for my customers. I purchased my domain name from godaddy and they offer dns for free to their customers. Long story short, I believe I have most every thing setup correctly except NS and mx records. When I send an email to a hotmail, yahoo, etc. account it comes back with an undeliverable message. When I run a nslookup -type=mx afgserv.com it does not come back with ns records for my domain, I think this is what my problem i but I am not sure how I should correct this. Do I need to create an ns record in the dns to point to my server that is hosting the domain and the mail server? Thanks |

You do need some ns records setup to point to where you'll be hosting your domain. Can you not send mail to any domain, or just yahoo, hotmail....? What is the undeliverable message you receive? |

This is the message I get, I am running hmail on my server
Remote server replied: 550 OU-001 Mail rejected by Windows Live Hotmail for policy reasons. Reasons for rejection may be related to content with spam-like characteristics or IP/domain reputation problems. If you are not an email/network admin please contact your E-mail/Internet Service Provider for help. Email/network admins, please visit for email delivery information and support It is pretty much to any of the free email servers, witch it what most of my customers use. So for the ns recore I would just create one like NS1 and point it to my servers IP running the website and mail server? I do not have DNS install on that servr is that ok? Thanks |

Look into setting up an SPF record. Also, you should setup RDNS. Many providers (such as hotmail and yahoo) won't accept mail without an RDNS setup. SPF records will also help in getting your mail delivered. To setup RDNS, contact your ISP... (I'm assuming your serving out of your place as opposed to a dedicated server). |

Ok I just setup a SPF record, my server is hosted at one of my colocation sites so I put in the request for them to setup the rdns at their location

That should fix everything for you.

After the RDNS has been setup at the colocation, let me know if mail is working properly or not. |
