DNS Help Somewhat a Noob
K guy's here's my deal, i have a web server in my garage with 4 domain's running on it,
Im running Argosoft Mail Server On it Im useing URL as my test site for e-mail and www puposes. 66.15.140.18 Recently with the AOL crap going on my cable line wasnt going to work anymore, so i brang in a static dsl line. i still have all my setup as Dynamic and really if theres no need to change it ill leave it as is. Is there any way i can setup Reverse DNS. Currently i am actually able to e-mail into AOL with three MX records active, but i fear soon i may have to a true Reverse DNS active to do so, is this even possible with a Dynamic Setup if so how would i go about doing it? thanks in advance to those who answer. |

Hi TheNewGuy1,
Can you setup reverse DNS on a dynamic IP? No. Can you setup reverse DNS on a static IP? Probably, you will need to contact your ISP and ask them to do it. Is there a way to send email to AOL using a dynamic address? I am not familiar with Argosoft Mail Server, but what you want is the ability to set an SMTP gateway that will forward emails that cannot be delivered by your email server to your ISP's SMTP server and let it send the email to your AOL customers on your behalf. Argosoft probably has a feature for it, if not check out www.intellipeer.com. Regards, Alan ______________ DNS Services: Nettica.com |

Thanks
Thanks For the info, Unfortunatly Verizon will not do it, i contacted them earlier and they said maybe if i had a T1 or something but nothing below that.
Im sure i can set the SMTP stuff up with my mail server, thats a good idea when aol finally say's no more. At this point im just going to hold out until they do it rather then wasting my time setting things up and the such. Quote:

Ah yes, I see. The good news is that AOL will probably accept email from your static IP address for quite a while as a lot of businesses would go into an uproar if they stopped. If it ever does stop you can always set an MX record using your ugly verizon DNS/reverse DNS address and change your email server to send/receive mail as that ugly name. Since your forward and reverse DNS would match, they should let it through. Then setup your real domain as a virtual domain for the email server and you'll be good to go.
