DNS is taking my soul
I have been out of the Net Admin business for about 2 years but it might as well be 100. I was recently asked to help build a domain for a small business. They have 3 workstations and one server for a pdc and one pos netgear router. I built the server on the Win2k Server platform. I have all of the workstations connected to the domain, however I cannot get my server to connect to the internet. Nor can I get the workstations on the internet either. I believe there is a problem with my dns server. I have reread all of my NT books but they're just not doing the trick. Because this is a small business they use Cable Broadband for the isp, which uses a dynamic ip address. I cannot figure out why but my DNS server will not resolve off site names. I can resolve all of my workstation and my server but I get no connection. I can ping both sides of my router and I know that my cable connection is good because, at one point I shut down the DNS and DHCP services and connected my server directly to the cable modem, and got service.
I did a nslookup on my server and got this. >server-2 Server: unknown address: 123.45.67.89 Name: Server-2.domainname.local address: 123.45.67.89 the server is always unknown no matter what computer name I put in but it always resolves the IP. I attempted to set up a forwarder and got nowhere. Now I am just lost. Thank you for any help you can provide... Paul |

The server unknown field just means that the IP address nslookup took from your resolver list could not be resolved to a domain name. It's a minor problem.

Close all that DNS stuff. Go to your PDC. Open network connections, and modify the TCP/IP properties for your network card. Set the DNS fields to the same ones your pos Netgear router is configured with, click ok a few times, and that should give everyone internet access. If not, make sure the DHCP server is making the default gateway the netgear and not the PDC.
