DNS on LAN, separated from Internet. Questions.
Hi!
I would like to set up a DNS server to make things easier when we are arranging LAN parties. Today, we are usually around 30 people, all with static IPs. I would love to be able to give our servers the addresses "cs.nordiccrew.com" "irc.nordiccrew.com" and so on... I just need to translate the "cs.nordiccrew.com" to x.x.x.x, nothing else, and if it is easy, I would like to have "crotale.nordiccrew.com" also =) The server that should handle this is a Win2k3, we don't have any Linux/unix skills at all ![]() (We are thinking about setting up a DHCP server also, but I will ask that in the corresponding section.) |

Hi,
If you are using W2k3, this should be reasonably easy. Go to the Manage Your Server wizard and add a new role. Select DNS and follow the wizard (enter the domain nordiccrew.com). When it has finished, open up DNS management. In Forward lookup zones select nordiccrew.com. Right click and select New Host (A) record. Enter something like cs or irc and then the IP address of the computer. Then, on each client computer set the DNS server to the IP address of the W2k3 machine (either manually or through DNS). HTH, Edwin |

Thanks alot edwinbrains! I got it all working, but not as good as I want.
xxxx.nordiccrew.com works flawless, but I wanted to make it a little shortes so I added another zone called nc.com. all but cs.nc.com works... Nothing happens when I ping it. Every other single name works, but not that one... I think I'll play around with it some more... |

I can't think why cs.nc.com shouldn't work, if xxxx.nc.com does work!
