DNS propagation issue after server migration
Hello
I recently moved from a reseller server to a dedicated server with the same company.
Once accounts were migrated i switched dns in the registrar cpanel (136 hours ago)
What has happened since is only about 50% of users can access the sites.
intoDNS: checks DNS and mail servers health
shows error
ERROR: One or more of your nameservers did not respond:
The ones that did not respond are:
XXX.73.170.74 XXX.73.170.75
Missing nameservers reported by your nameservers
NS records at your nameservers are missing
However the dns for the server has 2 different ip records to the ones shown above. XXX.73.160.163 XXX.73.160.164
Also
Global DNS Propagation Checker - What's My DNS?
For 120hours showed 50% propagation then at 1030pm GMT last night 100% propagation now today at 700am GMT its back to 50% propagation again.
Does anyone know what the issue is?
The hosting company says I should contact the registrar to map the dns to the correct ip - i have never had to enter ip in their control panel previously only DNS.
The registrar says there is an error with the nameserver setup.
I am caught in the middle and wonder if anyone could advise.
If anyone wants to test the issue please use the following domain name manzortranslations dot com
Thanks

Hi Thanks - i ended up moving that account back to the old server where it is propagating fine again.
This has proven to me that the issue must reside with the hosting company not setting up their server correctly.
An account which is still on this server is fahans-dot-com there are still issues with dns propagation after 5 days.

This is because your dedicated server is now serving as the nameserver instead of the web host's nameserver. Before, you did not need to register the nameservers with the registrar because the web host had already done that for their own servers.

All the root servers respond with:
fahans.com [109.73.160.162]
host - dns25840.dizinc.com [109.73.170.74]
dns25841.dizinc.com [109.73.170.75]
but my own DNS returns a server failure. This means that it has not updated itself with the root servers. Examining the SOA:
Name: fahans.com
Type: SOA - Marks the start of a zone of authority
Class: IN - The Internet
TTL: 86400 seconds
Data Length: 66 octets
MName: dns25840.dizinc.com
RName: info.ontargetwebdesign.net
Serial: 2013011901
Refresh: 86400 seconds
Retry: 7200 seconds
Expire 3600000 seconds
Minimum: 86400 seconds
OpenDNS returns [67.215.66.132]???????

Thanks for your replies
I contacted the registrar about this...
Quote: All questions relating to any services for this domain should now be referred only to your new hosting company, as they are the ones solely responsibly for where your domain is pointing to.
The only connection with names.co.uk now for your domain is that it is still renewed through us.
With regards to the query re their nameserver IPs, we do not submit IP addresses in a nameserver redeleagtion, only the nameserver hostnames. |
So I'm stuck in the middle and not sure what the issue is.

Let me see if I can shed some light on this for you. Many moons ago, you could supply any 2 IP addresses to the registrar to act as hosts or nameservers. For reasons unknown to me, they changed it so that authoritative nameservers had to be registered as nameservers. Consequently, you now supply the names of the registered nameservers instead of the IP's. Those authoritative nameservers then supply the IP address for the domain.
In the case of fahans.com, the registered nameservers/hosts are:
dns25840.dizinc.com [109.73.170.74]
dns25841.dizinc.com [109.73.170.75]
I just happened to use dns25841.dizinc.com, which returns [109.73.170.75]. However, when I use dns25840.dizinc.com, the request times out. Either dns25840.dizinc.com has not been setup correctly, or it has failed to be updated from dns25841.dizinc.com.

Hi Coutts
The Hosting company claim that the server ips are
dns25840.dizinc.com*- 109.73.160.163
dns25841.dizinc.com*- 109.73.160.164
intodns.com says differently too.
I will take up your findings with them
Thanks for your reply.

it looks like you have the problem sorted out. Both servers are returning [109.73.160.162], although my own DNS servers are still timing out.
