DNS resolving only 50% of the time?
I have a domain record which has worked for about a year without issue. It had 5 devices ("A" records) like this:
devicename 60 IN A 1.2.3.4 Each one having its own line. Now, I have added 4 more devices (total of 9 devices). For some reason, the new devices resolve sporatically - about 1/2 of the time. For example, I will be on the site using a browser, and all of the suddent, I click a link, and the hostname is unresolved. This happens from many locations (inside my internal network, from a dial-up account, and even from a corporate network where I work). Is there something I did wrong? Please help - this is frustrating... Thanks in advance. -Anthony |

check your dns record data very very carefully. perhaps the error you're getting is simply programs (web browsers) choking on a mistyped IP in one of the A records -- that would make it a low probability that any resolution on the name would make the browser choke. Check with dig -- you that's greek, email me (click on my name) the hostname you're having trouble with; takes 2 seconds for me to check -- and it will give you a separate view.

I don't understand what you mean here. What is DIG? I tried emailing you, but the system says I can't. Did you want me to post the DNS file contents? Thanks for your help. -Anthony |

sorry... I think I had my account prefs here on devshed set wrong. Try mailing me again...
'dig' is a common command line tool on Unix systems. It's like a swiss army knife for looking into DNS servers. You can post your config -- but I can tell in a second using dig if the data LOADED in your dns servers is right. Elliminates the whole issue of verifying you've loaded the config you think you loaded, updated serial numbers, etc... and I can only read/understand bind DNS config files... -c |
