dns server working but...
my dns server is working. You can even use SilentRange's DNS lookup tool to make queries to it. it works. The address is 68.209.106.219
the problem is when I try to change the dns server information of my registrar. The registrar gives me an error tellime me that no dns srever could be found at this address. I tried it in two registrars and they tell me the same thing. why are these registrar not finding the dns server.

If you are creating ns server hosts based off the domain you are registering then you need to create or register the name server hosts with that registrar first.

oh, ok.
Let me just put this in other words to see if I understand correctly. If I register the domain foobar.com with, let say, godaddy.com, and then make an authoritive ns for that domain I have to register the ns server I just made with godaddy before I can use it. Do I have to register the ns with all the registrars that will be using my ns, or do I just just do it once, and all the registars will know about it. The second option is the one that seems logical to me because if I host other people's dns record they would have to register me with their registrar. thanks silent Last edited by kubicon : January 16th, 2004 at 06:20 AM. |

The reason you have to create or register your ns domains (i.e. "ns1.foobar.com" and "ns2.foobar.com") is cause they don't exist yet. Godaddy needs to know the IP address of your domains so that people can query your dns server.

Well, in the field where you enter your dns information, I tried to enter the ip address of my dns server. Using this method, it seems they should let me do it as I'm not using a name, but the direct ip.

DNS doesn't work that way buddy. Your registrar needs to create "NS" records and it is declared in the DNS standards that you are not allowed to use IP addresses in NS records. You must specify domains in the NS records then specify IP's for the domains.
So you need to tell your registrar both domain and IP. |
