DNS Won't Point?
Hi:
My website is "coopercentral.org". On my registrar, I created a new name server called "ns1.coopercentral.org", and pointed it to my IP address "24.169.144.218". If you point your browser to: http://ns1.coopercentral.org It will show my site. That is what SHOULD come up if you go to: http://www.coopercentral.org But it doesn't. I'm currently running Simple DNS Plus, have all the records there, but it just doesn't resolve. I've waited the 24-72 hours, and still nothing. Is there anything that I'm missing? Thanks for your help!! Ken Cooper

Simple DNS has a tool at their site http://www.jhsoft.com/lookup.asp give it a try.
Your server isn't up. This is the result of the tool. DNS server on 24.169.144.218 did not respond within 10 seconds! This could be caused by a slow network link or network congestion, so try the look up a few more times. Make sure Simple DNS Plus is configured to listen for DNS requests on the Internet IP address (Options Dialog / IP Addresses). If you have a firewall or NAT server, make sure it is configured to pass through DNS requests (UDP port 53). It's not a resolution issue. Your port appears to be open, though so it's likely it's a program issue. Is there anything in the logs?

This is a local problem. Check your hosts file. The same page loads for both domains. And your full DNS information is shown below - it looks fine.
dig @ns1.coopercentral.org coopercentral.com axfr

Hi:
What hosts file? Not much happens in my active log, but this is what displayed: 18:53:51 Zone Transfer Request from 68.51.39.58 for coopercentral.org. (TCP) 18:53:51 Sending Zone Transfer to 68.51.39.58 for coopercentral.org. Yes, I noticed that I went to that page, and my site showed all the correct things, except it DOESN'T point to my apache server AT ALL. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks for your help, and time!! Ken Cooper |

Nevermind the hosts file. If you don't know what it is, then it is not the problem.
And what do you mean it doesn't point to your apache server? You just said the website works? |

Hi:
Well, the website did work. But now I'm on Redhat 9 on Apache 1.3.29. If I'm on the Redhat, or other networked computer, if I type in my ISP IP address, which my site should be pointed to: 24.169.144.218 (which are the addresses of ns1, ns2 .coopercentral.org) It shows the test page for Apache. But if I go to coopercentral.org, it just doesn't do anything. How can I point my site to my apache server, 24.169.144.218? I already have the 2 nameservers created. Whenever I do a DNS lookup, it says 24.169.144.218:53 TCP connection failed. I KNOW for a fact that it's the Linux Firewall because I did this before on Windows, and it worked. Apparently port 53 is closed. How can I tell that port 53 is open or closed? Anything else I can do? Thanks for your help!! Ken Cooper |

yes, apparently UDP and TCP port 53 cannot be reached. Also, port 80 cannot be reached. Definately firewall problems. Unfortunately I am not familiar with linux firewall configuration, so I can't help ya. As soon as you get those ports opened, I'll help you with any DNS problems you still have.
And to make your root domain work, you need to add a record like the following to your zone file: coopercentral.com. A 24.169.144.218 |
