domain name masking
Hi all,
Can someone please kindly explain to me - or maybe point me to a documentation - on HOW domain name masking work? I already have a registered name : URL which now forwards to, and masks, my website URL Now, whatever page I view displays just the "www.registered.com" , not URL URL , not even URL or URL Just URL Not so neat. I want to know what happens behind-the-scenes. Thanks in advance ! |

yeah, i'm aware of that link... i've read it while browsing some of the posts here and perfectly understand the rationale.
however, the reason i decline to post my real domain names is that, my website is in the works and personal and it's kind of embarassing to expose it here. i think my issue does not need any debugging, anyways, as it is not a problem per se. make an exception ? ![]() |

No. I have no idea how the "masking" is working - I suspect it's using HTML frames, which is why the top bar isn't changing. Without your actual DNS information though, it's impossible to tell, and I'd just be guessing. |

thanks. you might be right ... the html code has frameset/frame. i thought there is something more besides that ...
you're right, too, about posting actual domain names. i didn't think it would help in my case, turns out, it would've. am still shy about the site, though, so all i can say are, "i stand corrected" , and i will definitely follow the 'rules' next time. thanks a lot. |

domain names masking
I have a similar problem.
My website is running on my mates web server. So I used a feature of 123reg.co.uk called 'web forwarding', so that going to onlineanimals.co.uk forwards you on to 'www.beezly.org.uk/~harry/animals' I have the option to do this either... ....with frames (which must be the way your 'masking' works) It leaves onlineanimals.co.uk in the URL and means users can't see a URL to link to specific pages. ...or by redirectiing which takes users instantly to URL Either way is a bit rubbish. I want it to look like onlineanimals.co.uk IS the website. So that URLs like URL would work, and would invisibly map on to... URL So my question is... Is it possible to set up a domain name in this way (and 123reg.co.uk just doesn't give me that option), or does a domain name always correspond only to an IP address? i.e. I have to have my own web server. |
