domain name resolution on the web without the www on windows 2000 server

My company recently put a dns server on the web. We are running a windows 2000 server. We want to know how to configure dns so that just by typing the domain name in a browser (URL) you get the address with the www prefix: URL I'm not sure if we have to use an A record or what. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, you are going to have create an "A" record that points to the IP of your webserver.

Example:

www host your IP.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

already have that

We have an A record for URL We want to be able to just type in the domain and have it go to the www address.

Example:

I type in URL in my browser's address bar.
I then want this address to resolve to URL

We have no problem with getting to URL The problem arises when we omit the URL

>> The problem arises when we omit the www

Then add an A record for the one without www as well.

dsapala, since you are new here, I have to tell you this: Next time you start a new thread, limit the subject title to below 40 chars (including whitespace), yours has 72 chars, way too long.

thanks

I'm sorry. I will keep the title smaller next time. I just wanted to provide enough information to help people who might search for this in the future. I searched the internet and found very little information on this topic. Many topics had information of a similar nature, but were Linux related. Thanks for the help.

I resolved the issue by making a new A record with a blank host section. This makes an A record with com as the domain and ourdomain as the host. I just seemed to miss this simple solution somehow.

That'd be in your post, not the subject title. The longer the subject title, the longer time it takes for everyone to read the forum index to find favorite topics. If every subject title is as long as yours, I'd leave ASAP.
