Login issue
Hi Guys
I have a windows XP box set up with Apache, MySql and PHP which I'm using together with Mambo CMS to set up an intranet site. I can ping the PC using "ping MachineName" from other machines and the name is resoved, using URL I can view the web pages from other PC and from the server so IE also resolves the name. But when I try to login to the site as an administrator I can't get in using the URL from a remote PC or from the server itself . I can connect to the site using URL Address/ and can then login OK from both the server and a remote PC. From the server I can also log in successfully using URL so I think (and others have suggested) this is a DNS issue and that both IE and ping are resloving the IP address from the name using WINS or NetBIOS not DNS. When using DHCP with the Windows does this automatically create an entry in the DNS server for the machine? Can I force the use of the DNS for name resolution in IE? And finally why would the resolution method affect the operation of Apache, PHP, MySql and Mambo? Thanks Last edited by CaptPugwash : June 23rd, 2004 at 05:41 PM. Reason: typo |

Do you have a dns server setup on the network to handle resolution of that name?

Yes there is a DNS server but there is no entry for the webserver machine. I have used "nslookup" to confirm that.
I have found options in the network setup on the webserver for windows to automatically add dns entries but it doesn't work so there must be something about the network setup that stopping that from happening but thats outside my control at the moment. Hi Capt,
Your administrator account have a blank password? If so, that's the problem. Give it a password (on the web server). In one of ths smartest security moves MS has ever made they deny remote network access using the administratot account unless it has a password.
