Map a subdomain to an external server
Hi,
I've run into a problem when trying to map a subdomain to an external server. I want my subdomain - let's call it sub.example.com - to point (not redirect) to the other server, where the files are hosted. So when someone requests the domain sub.example.com the files at some.other.domain.com/subfolderwithfiles/ are loaded. I have access to a Control Panel on both servers, and I can manually configure all the Custom A, MX and Name records I want. But I need an explanation of what to do on which server, and, preferably, how to do it. Just tell me if there's more information you think I should provide you with, such as IP addresses and settings. As you might see from the above explanation, my knowledge of domains, servers and DNS is very limited. Thanks, zyphh |

This is purely a webserver provided feature. Tell me what webserver www.example.com website is stored on and I'll move this to the appropriate forum.

If I understand this correctly, you already have www.domain.com pointing to an IP address (say 1.2.3.4) on one webserver. Now you want subdomain.domain.com pointing to a different IP address (say 5.6.7.8) which is on another webserver. Is this correct? In this case, you'll need to create an A record to point the subdomain to the second IP address (5.6.7.8) and then set up the second webserver to respond to subdomain.domain.com.

Since he said "some.other.domain.com/subfolderwithfiles/" I assumed he was talking about URL forwarding.

I don't know too much about web administration/dns. But I need to do the same thing on IIS. Can you provide detailed steps on how to do this? For example, I want to map abc.domain.com to www.anotherdomain.com/somefile/ (I don't want to redirect or forward, I want the IP address of www.anotherdomain.com/somefile/ to resolve to abc.domain.com) Thanks. This is simply a matter of configuring IIS to show the data from the directory /somefile/ for the virtual host www.domain.com. You should ask this question in the IIS forum here.

Glad to get some corroboration. This is the second time a person has been told to post in another forum in this topic. This is rediculous. Leave other people's topics alone. Topic closed.
